^Itâs not necessarily always that youâd know⊠I had a supervisor that had moved on, and when I left the job, I didnât expect to run across them, ever again. I was set to interview at a new job, but when I got there, the original interviewer couldnât make it⊠guess who took their place? My old boss was there now, and going to fill in as interviewer at the last minute. -âAnd some places will have multiple interviewers and you could have a set time, but not a set interviewer⊠sort of a get âem in, get âem out sort of deal. . So it couldâve been that she just so happened to get her, due to simultaneous interviews, and when she arrived, Mizz Phelps was the one available.

I understand Berniceâs surprise but doesnât Miss Phelps have Berniceâs application/resume with her name and other information in hand? Why is she surprised?

Now we know what the universe was telling Bernie, you have to apologize.
JayBluE almost 12 years ago
Well, that particular boss seemed to just want to outshine everybody, and they resented anyone else who might be able to take the attention from themâŠ.
JayBluE almost 12 years ago
Did she not look at the roster of who was coming for the interview?^some commenters think it could be the âincompetenceâ factor, according to Berniceâs opinion. âBut Miss Phelps could have been doing a favor for someone and filling in on short term notice, or if she knew she was going to be there, could have just been handed the list at the last minute from the Generalist or whoever was compiling it (In my workplace Iâve seen it) and didnât notice Berniceâs name among themâŠ.

When I started teaching my former sixth grade teacher was also now working at the school to which I was assigned ! that wasnât so easy. She knew me when I was 12.

Ms. Phelps has always been competent. I mean, look at how helpful, concerned, and calm she was when Delta fainted due to her Hodgkinâs lymphoma. But for as long as this strip has been around, sheâs been portrayed as an uptight, out-of-date fuddy-duddy who doesnât know anything about life, much less teens, and thatâs due to her creator himself, Greg Evans. In one of his blogs, he said that he never saw a school counselor when he was a teen and didnât appreciate what todayâs experts tell teens about life. In short, he doesnât think very much of school counselors and he shows it in the way he portrays Ms. Phelps, especially in the how he uses puns in her office (e.g., the âCount Slurâ on her name plate). Even the way he draws her shows his contempt for counselors: the same, dull clothes she always wears, her tightly drawn mouth, and her lack of a bust or any other normal womanly shape (ever noticed that?). Of course, heâs also portraying her just as Bernice, Luann, Delta, and the other kids at Pitts H.S. see her. People of that age will always see Phelps (or most other adults) in pretty much that wayâoutdated and not understanding a thing about them or life.

So what is Ms. Phelps doing there? Is she leaving Pittsville? Does Bernice have to keep a secret?
Endunamoo almost 12 years ago
both of them drove 3 hours? for an interview? JessshâŠ
terek almost 12 years ago
With Berniceâs bad luck Miss Phelps most likely overheard her insulting remark outside the door and will probably disqualify her thinking that Bernice wants her job!
legaleagle48 almost 12 years ago
Oh, the irony, it burns so deliciously!
eocene82 almost 12 years ago
Why is her current school counselor holding interviews for a position three hours away?
Dconskjk almost 12 years ago
Dun Dun Duuuuuuun!
jadoo823 almost 12 years ago
âŠeasy explanation for Ms Phelpsâ surprise â she was not surprised to see Bernice, she was surprised to see Berniceâs CONDITION â her clothes are a wreck. Sheâs probably wondering why Bernice would show up for an interview dressed like a preppy car mechanic. As for interviewing 3 hours away, perhaps this is a place that Ms Phelps volunteers for on a regular basis. School councellors do have lives outside of school, you know. Pretty teen-agey of Bernice to assume that Phelps is incompetent â all teens think they know everything. Then they hit the real world â and the real world hits backâŠ

Love it! If Bernice gets the internship, Ms. Phelps will look good for having placed a student. Plus, she probably knows Berniceâs parents.*If she does, by summerâs end, I bet theyâll be friends, or at least supporting each other.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 12 years ago
Oh yeah, figured out that they looked in the button box and didnât have any spares to use. Thus, the âRefreshâ button is now serving as the âLoad 15 moreâ button. (Or so I imagine would be the response of our parents.)
ACTIVIST1234 almost 12 years ago
On the down side, if Bernice does get the internship and itâs at Pitts High, sheâll have access to lots of confidential info about her friends. Not good.

What qualifies Bernice to declare Ms. Phelps â100% incompetentâ? It seems to me that Phelps has spent decades in the school system, getting annual performance reviews by her bosses â sheâs not getting by on looks- and Bernice has got exactly squat for experience as a counselor, unless you count making catty remarks in Luannâs bedroom. So much for Berniceâs image as level headed and objective.

Having served as an interviewer at several jobs, I can tell you that we are often not even given information on an applicant â we are given a list of questions to ask. The applications are reviewed by the HR department and a list of the âtop 10â identified. In order to avoid âprejudicingâ interviewers (who might be predisposed against someone due to a last name suggesting an ethnicity, for example), all we were given was the list of questions that were required to be asked of all applicants.
