Just goes to show that kids are a lot more observent than we give them credit for. They can already tell Tiffany is a phony.

I can already tell that this is not going to end well for Tiffany!
JayBluE about 11 years ago
With Tiffany offering material treats and Lu offering time and attention, maybe this is supposed to be a “glimpse” into how these two were- to show us that Tiffany grew up having things like toys and candy thrown at her, in contrast to Lu’s household giving more personal attention… or something like that….

Well, this is going to be painful. Nice to see Luann is a hit with the kids. Still going ??? over the premise of Tiff in this job.

….as an aside to the strip, there is like this weird wind that is blowing making me want to yawn and put on my hip boots at the same time. I can’t quite put my finger on it though.

Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting chapter of “The kids love me better than you!”
JayBluE about 11 years ago
This “candy and toys vs. genuine hugs and attention” aspect also brings to my mind the way that children’s television used to have that “human touch”… and now, it’s almost like “infomercials”, since the programs also have all of this merchandise, toys, etc., not to mention DVDs, bunches of concerts, etc., that kids will ask to go see… of course, some shows aren’t like that, but it seems that a lot of them these days, are just a “licensing machine” that just happens to make kids shows…
JayBluE about 11 years ago
But after all is said and done, maybe all Tiff needs is for a kid to treat her nicely, without strings, and then she can learn to fit in… well, that’s how it would seem “on paper”!…

And “Greg gets back at all the cheerleaders who ignored him in high school” week begins!

This is why I think it’s either a stroke or Alzheimer’s as it he precludes any sort of rationality.

> Will the author ever present a plausible reason why Tiffany would want this job or care if children like her more than Luann?>An actress wants an audience, constantly. Tiffany wouldn’t be happy with a job that doesn’t bring her into contact with a large group of people. She needs to be in front of a crowd, even one of little kids. And all actresses want to be popular, so of course she cares whether the kids like her.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
I was thinking more along the lines of B.S. repellent ^I really was also going to say get your gas mask, too… What you said also had made me think of the “world’s worst job”… But this is a job that goes looking for people!.
JayBluE about 11 years ago
It’s funny, but I had that same reasoning, too! It seemed to work sometimes, and then one day, all of a sudden, boom! -Maybe for him, the key is when his is six lines or less… in his case, when it’s more, it tends to be those “non-sequiturs” strung together….
barbarasbrute about 11 years ago
That’s the Alzheimer’s. They have good days and bad days until eventually there are no more good days. I haven’t paid much attention to the times of day his posts are, but around sunset is usually their worst times as they are “sundowning”. For some reason they’re affected by the sun going down. (True story)
luann1212 about 11 years ago
I usually don’t comment on Greg Evan’s drawing, which has developed as this comic I have been following since at least the mid-90s if not before, but I do notice today that the striped shirt boy saying yah in the first panel, has an orange striped shirt in the third panel. Interesting.
barbarasbrute about 11 years ago
I’m familiar, as my father-in-law had it. This is why I think he has some sort of a neurological issue, and not just a clown trying to act like an idiot for attention.
Sisyphos about 11 years ago
Aww. The Library Kids are Luann’s Kids! Reminds me of a noted professor at the college I attended whose students famously thought of themselves as “[Professor X’s] kids.” Tiffany is on the outside looking in, and bless the kid who volunteers for a dangerous mission to give her a hug!

Some of you are wondering why Tiff wanted this job in the first place. My opinion: She probably found out Luann was applying for the job and just applied for it because it is in her nature. By her nature, I mean the same thing she does time and time again, which is be competitive with Luann. Look at what she does with Quill (btw I thought he was coming back to the states for his senior year or did I miss something?). Anyway, the point I was trying to make is, Tiff didn’t actually want the job because she is interested in spending time with children, she wanted the job for the same reason she wanted Quill, which is to compete with Luann. I’m sure the same thing would have happened if Luann had applied for a job scrubbing toilets.

tp66 about 11 years ago
Tiff:OK Lu: Here’s a copy of my plans for the kids library time.Just follow along and we’ll get along fine. Now, pick up these books and shelve them. While you’re at it, there are some crayon marks on the desks I told the librarian you’d take care of. I want this done before you leave today. Oh, and by the way, Quill called me several times last week. He’s fine and said to tell you “hi”.
TORAD_07 about 11 years ago
Well, at least Tiff started off with “bribery” and not “ridicule” of the kids. ;-PPP Gotta love the kid with the glasses in the 4th panel. CLASSIC!
Anyway, y’all have fun today & tomorrow. I have a major credential exam coming up so I’l be sitting the next two days out. Be back Wed. morning.

(SIGH) You know, THIS “Vicious Cycle” has gone on LONG Enough.
Luann? Send the Kiddies into the next room for Cookies and Ice Cream.
CLOSE the Door and Tell the “BlondBo” You’d like to have a little chat.
THEN Unexpectedly SLAP the LIVING HEL…,er, HECK, Out of Her.
And while Tiff REGAINS Consciousness, Continue reading to the Kids.
Problem SOLVED. And as ALWAYS, You DON’T have to THANK Me….,
milania about 11 years ago
When was it ever lame? It seemed pretty typically “teenager” to me. Not everyone needs a bunch of kids around to be “normal”.
Sportymonk about 11 years ago
Luann has a chance to be mature and end the rivalry and help Tiff become something real. Maybe?
reedkomicks Premium Member about 11 years ago
I love this, and it’s not because of Tiffany’s defeat, but because of what Luann has built for herself by being a kind and giving person. Now, if Quill was waiting for her at her house, that would complete the picture.
Pelahnar about 11 years ago
“My kids” :) My sister recently finished her bachelor’s in elementary education and while she was student teaching, she referring them as “my kids”. She’s got a job in a day care now, and they are, of course, still “her kids”.
schmid13 about 11 years ago
“…time for Tiff to hang out with the cheerleaders…” And that is getting to be a core implausibility to me too. Tiff is beginning to seem like a stalker of Luann. Her comedic loser status has become sad to me. This arc is a chance for Luann to get her wings and lead Tiff somewhere. You know the image of Luann surrounded by loving children seems to fit well in very favorable Christian imagery (think Jesus with the children). If Tiff could be shown how to get that gift with Luann’s “less is more” style, because Tiff certainly is “more is less”, then Luann would have achieved something substantial. Just my take.

As someone else has already commented, why would Tiffany want this job? It has nothing to do with any sort of career in modeling or acting.

For the record: with regard to a recent comment about Knute’s glasses – he does not wear prescription lenses. He wears tinted glasses for style, they should never appear as clear. It’s just that someone (cough-cough) sometimes forgets to tint them. Sept 21 for example.

Maybe Tiff will learn some humility…Nah, what was I thinking!
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
I am just very grateful that Greg decided to let Luann succeed in getting this job, instead of leaving her on the outside as he did with drama camp. And I, too, hope that Luann sees her future in kindergarten teaching. She has a real gift for working with kids. Part of that gift is, she actually likes them as people, not as an ‘audience’ that can be bribed with gifts. (Some parents never learn that, sadly)

Schizoprehenics have more problems than just confused thoughts; like the fellow who recently shot a lot of people at the naval yard. Schizoprehenics have hallucinations that people are doing things to them; like this man thought people were bombarding them him with low power microwaves. They can also hear voices that tell them to do horrible things, or that they are horrible, and that the only way to end all this is to end their own lives or take out those who are hurting them. A recent interview on 60 Minutes with an authority on this emphasized that Schizoprehenia is the disease of the brain; that studies of the brains of those afflicted show great differences from the brains of those not suffering from this disease. It is thought to be genetic in origin. More and more, it sounds like a disease similar to dementia. Horribly sad.
Argy.Bargy2 about 11 years ago
I haven’t been following the comic as long as most of you, but my impression of Tiffany was not that she was interested in children’s theater, either. I had a cousin who studied both theater arts and occupational therapy (with a minor in art), and she spent several years with a nonprofit group that visited hospitalized kids, put on little therapeutic shows for them and so on. I had the opportunity to meet some of my cousin’s fellow actors, and they were a very special bunch. Reminded me very much of ‘Mr. Rogers’, who I had an opportunity to meet many, many years ago in hometown Pittsburgh. Very special folks devote themselves to kids this way.

MJ:Where are my thoughts confused and out of order- please provide some examples.^^I haven’t got enough time, seriously Donny, there are times when you make no sense, just ask anyone in this room… When you take your time and keep it short, you can make good points, but, often, you tend to write long novels full of nonsense which often contradict each other

I too like to gripe about the plot. It’s so much more gratifying than orchestrating some sort of forum kumbaya moment of communal bliss. It’s either griping or realizing this is just a comic strip. The dissonance between these competing ideas leaves me persevering in a state of confusion. Maybe I could just go write my own strip, be the president, crack the dna code, and bring world peace. OR we could just all have fun.

“…while Luann did not appear to have a solid idea as to what she would do after high school…” Good thought; I think this very well might be the case. I think it would be interesting to see how this after-school job will work out, especially if Luann realizes she has a unique talent with younger children… ;)
