Quite literally, “Estamos aqui!”= “We are here!” – Wouldn’t be surprised to see Ed Begley Jr. or Howie Mandell running around down here… with their TV Doctor’s lcenses….

My goodness! ¡La clínica es enorme! (Gunther, like me, must’ve thought the clinic to be small.)

Didn’t Rosa even know that her uncle’s clinic was in Lima? How could she have made all these plans with him, and never ask?
piloti about 10 years ago
I hardly think that Rosa is that shallow. But, it’s only a comic strip after all.
jemgirl81 about 10 years ago
I thought we’d see a Doctors Without Borders clinic. Would have been more interesting. Anyway, could we please get back to Bernice’s mystery roommate situation?

First aid kit? To a clinic?!
atomicdog about 10 years ago
Ha! The physical plant of a modern hospital is a great place for Gunther to get engineering experience!
Angelalex242 about 10 years ago
This is…very good for Gunther, very..I’m not sure for Rosa.
Gunther wins, because this sort of clinic can get him started on pre-med. Rosa…I dunno.

“This is the actual clinic…” ^
Hopefully, when Rosa and Gunther get to the concierge, they’ll know the secret password…

We’ll be having an exciting Tuesday later on..we’re heading for our state’s “State Fair.” I especially like the crafts exhibits. There is even going to be a glass-maker (I’ve always been fascinated with glass-blowing). And, of course, the requisite animals, both big and small. I even like some of the “fair food”…even if the cholesterol is off the charts! Gotta love the ‘net…downloaded the tickets to get in and also a map of the fair-grounds, and a MapQuest, too! Anyway, ’nite all! ;)-——————————————————————————-“The posteriors of this day; which the rude multitude call the afternoon.” (_Love’s Labour’s Lost_ by Wm. Shakespeare, 1564-1616)

the clinic they went to MIGHT be “clinica good hope”, which is even bigger than suggested in the drawing, and close to the Hotel, there is a KFC and a TGIF, also a steakhouse Tony Roma’s

“I’m so ready to leave this ritzy hotel. My parents would be furious to discover I blew so much of my budget on this. Oh no—my uncle must make a decent living, so we could keep living there after all! Darn, why did we check out?!”

So, Moony and Yale after all, then?

Well, today’s strip verifies that Gunther doesn’t know Spanish. Rosa will get very tired, very fast, of being his translator.
Lady Nicole about 10 years ago
That’s some clinic!
jemgirl81 about 10 years ago
@Jim T: Yes, I know. Still wish Greg had taken them somewhere
Caldonia about 10 years ago
So, a huge misstep here. For whatever reason, Evans wanted his readers to buy into the “Gunther is a nice boy and deserves a hot girlfriend because he’s nice and boring like an old man in a wimpy teen’s body did I mention he’s nice?” thing—and now, he forces the pair into a plot that makes NO SENSE. Ha ha, let’s have TJ on trial, instead!
jemgirl81 about 10 years ago
Oops. Stupid tablet lol. I accidentally touched the submit button too soon. I wish Greg had taken them somewhere more impoverished .

WHERE’S the Old Army Surplus Tent Located in a BUG Infested Jungle?
WHERE’S Snakes??
WHERE’S The Shining Path Guerillas Eager to get Their Hands on an American so They can Hold Him Hostage???
Barry1941 about 10 years ago
So Gunther goes to a country to work where he has no knowledge of the language. Makes a lot of sense.
Chuck374 about 10 years ago
They took a tour of the city and didn’t come across this?
Chuck374 about 10 years ago
Just what is it that she expects to DO at her uncles clinic? And Gunther, for all his brains, does not even understand the most basic Spanish?
juanandresbyrne about 10 years ago
I’m actually from Lima, Peru. If it took so little time to get from that hotel, supposedly the Marriot (by the way, it has an incredible ocean view), to the clinic, it will surely be a good clinic. “Clinicas” are usually privately owned, whereas hospitals are usually state hospitals, and not always that good. Lima is quite a big city, 10 million people, and you will find first-class accommodations, as well as very poor areas (the latter usually in the outskirts of the city). Having been once the capital of the viceroyalty of Peru, which in the 16th to 17th century was a great part of South America, Lima has a lot of history. Not far from here, about 160 miles north, is Caral, the oldest city in all of the Americas (roughly 2600 b.C. and 2000 b.C.). Lima has a lot of tradition and a very rich history, and great contrasts between very wealthy neighborhoods and much poverty.

Rosa gave up Yale for this? Que tonta.
Sisyphos about 10 years ago
Not only is Gunther’s girlfriend a sophisticated multilingual world traveller and daughter of a diplomat, but also it seems that her uncle’s “clinic” is not the tiny struggling storefront-in-a-rundown-neighborhood that even Rosa expected! This new twist should be fun!
TheLiam about 10 years ago
So let me see if I understand this correctly, Rosa, who was apparently smart enough to be accepted to Yale did not bother doing any research when it came to Peru and the clinic? Not only that but Gunther who apparently is equally smart decided to follow without much though? Bottom line is they both gave up their education on a whim for something that is failing across the board. There’s not much either of them can do in a clinic like that short of bed pans and paperwork. Then again with Evans at the helm when has reality mattered.
ctsignguy about 10 years ago
It is also possible that this large hospital has many clinics in the poorer areas of the city and Rosa and Gunther will be quickly whisked to one of those…
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
Easy does it folks. There may still be hope.
Do we know that the driver took them to the correct clinic? Do we know if this clinic has “satellites/outreach stations” in places more aligned with Rosa’s mindset? There are a number of plausible possibilities.
Still, I fear like most here, that Rosa may have not done her proper homework, and will have second thoughts about staying here in Peru. Which also brings to mind, a more “Machiavellian” possibility. Are Rosa’s parents actually in on the whole thing, and colluded with the Uncle to mis-direct them to the wrong clinic, so that she would be disappointed and want to come back home and go to Yale???? Hmmmmm……. :-PPP
Caldonia about 10 years ago
What a terrible uncle, too. He didn’t tell her a single thing about this clinic, and her parents have no idea what it’s like either? “Wait’ll my niece sees this, it’s gonna be hilarious!”-I wonder if that ferret is getting enough exercise?
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 10 years ago
Ugh. I am of the “camp” that thinks that Rosa had no real clue or insight into what or where she would be working. I think she thought “impoverished location, helping the poor” and she now finds out it is “urban chic folks”. I am finding Rosa more and more frustrating. Hopefully Gunther will get a clue and move on with his life.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace about 10 years ago
Gunther IS boring, but remember the word has more than just one meaning and one might counterbalance the other, especially with his singlemindedness.

Rosa looks like she is about to tackle the highest mountain in Peru. She even has the bug repellent, food, water and the first aid kit. She probably remembered the rest of the ten essentials, too.

I agree that this is the wrong clinic. Most likely the taxi driver heard the word ‘clinic’ and brought them to the nearest clinic.

Interesting! I was also living in Madrid around the end of the time you were there – 1967-68, actually. My dad was an American professor in an overseas program. We used to go to Torrejon to get American cereals, among other hard-to-find stuff.
It was only years later I learned more about the political complexities of the era. Have you been back since?
As for the strip, I hope that one or both of them thrives in this new situation, rather than just going back home. My guess is Gunther will find his niche in the clinic, at least for awhile.
Reddyan about 10 years ago
Wow, Look at Rosa’s safari outfit! She was SERIOUSLY expecting to be out in the jungle! I’ll be she ends up answering phones and emptying bed pans! Lol!
nadacomplicado about 10 years ago
Hey Brdsht, that’s the actual clinic? The picture of the one you posted and the sign says. “Viva El Salvador”? What does El Salvador have to do with Lima?
MysteryCat about 10 years ago
OK, this is the headquarters for the organization that operates several clinics in the country. The one Rosa will be working in is satisfactorily humble. Anyway, that’s my guess.
maverick1usa about 10 years ago
They are dressed for jungle work – maybe Dez is in there someplace!
ACTIVIST1234 about 10 years ago
At least they have snacks and water in case they get lost in the hallways. Wonder if they have GPS and matches?*Maybe Rosa will find that they can do more by outreach from such a major institution than they can by setting up an independent clinic int he bush.

Definition of the term “moron” by the Free Dictionary online:1. A stupid person, a dolt.2. Pschology: A peson of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational eduacation. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and now considered offensive.-It appears to me that neither definition applies to Rosa…
Airman about 10 years ago
Major fork in the road. Did Rosa fail to get all the information from her uncle? Is this hospital just a staging center for a more remote clinic? Has Rosa just derailed two promising college careers? Will Gunther begin to resent Rosa? And, finally, will they move into one room together?
percenez about 10 years ago
looks like she is ready to do some “riding”.
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr about 10 years ago
And what, in Rosa’s mind, was to be her support role in her uncle’s clinic given her lack of medical education even if it had turned out to be in a rural setting?
doverdan about 10 years ago
What language did Gunther study in HS ? With any academic major, he had to have one. Universities require such..Given the probable location of Pitts (So. Cal., or Arizona), most kids would study Spanish. Many schools only have that, but some larger ones would have French — a few German. [ Latin is long gone. ].Big city experimental schools could have Russian or Chinese, Pitts seems most unlikely..Even Knute or Ox would know ’estamos aqui ’ if they took only one semester of Spanish..So Gunther is either very stupid, in DEEP panic, or most probably took German.

“I actually lived in Spain….”Cool!-This brings to mind pamplona and the running of the bulls: I wonder—have any women ever run with the bulls?
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
Also, this one that you put up could merit the “Bingo”
I hope it leans more towards the “outreach center” scenario… ;-)
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
Wonder no more – I have been to the running of the bulls twice while I lived in Spain. There were some women that did participate. The picture below shows one woman that decided to get a little too involved:
I hope the young lady was not seriously injured or, at last, recovered quickly.

I note that a number of the “clinica’s” specialize in plastic surgery …. is Rosa’s uncle perhaps a plastic surgeon?-Dave, I bet you are the one Sheriff is talking about!
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
All this running of the bulls reminds me of a demotivational poster I saw once. It said, “I never ran with the bulls in Spain, but I was outside a Curves once when the fire alarm went off…”
I’ll be honest, I was never big on bull fighting and/or the Pamplona run (I guess I’ll have to turn in my “Ernest Hemingway” card…) ;-). But did you ever go to the “Tomatina?” That seems interesting. Once a year, people gather in this particular town in Spain (I forget the name), where, at the appointed hour, and precisely for one hour only, people get to throw rotten tomatoes at each other. They have to be “rotten” tomatoes because actual “fresh” tomatoes are hard enough to hurt someone if thrown at them. After one hour, precisely, it stops, and people clean up and the town goes back to normal. To quote Mr. Spock, “Fascinating…” In fact, sort of like the “Landru” episode with the “festival.”
“Are you of the body?” :-)
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
La Tomatina is always held on the last Wednesday in August. If you drive really fast, you can still get there…
Nah…. a little too sudden. :-) And I don’t care much for tomatoes, anyway…
;-)
