Havenât had one since. So, in the summer I live on cold tea (a glass which I just finished), and in the winter I drink hot tea and hot chocolate⊠;)

Ha ha! These days a⊠âthrowbackâ.. is anything from last month! â Now thereâs âretroâ, âold schoolâ, and âvintageâ. Aah, those good old days, when we all just called it âold stuffââŠ.
I live right next to Michigan State University. I see a lot of good âkidsâ start the semester. Generally 1 out of 3 canât cut it because of too much partying or bad grades. So may start the end here, too.
All I can say is, Bernince, âcaution.â I have no idea what GE has planned for you, and certainly a little partying is a good thing⊠but âcaution.â Remember why youâre there.
Weâd have these kinds of parties in the floor lounge, not in an individual room (or doorms were only singles and doubles⊠no quads). I must say our floor could host a most excellent âKegger,â back when they were allowed (in my senior year, they rose the drinking age to 21, so no more âUniv. Housingâ sanctioned Keggers. :( Just as well⊠I hated the taste of beer and all they ever wanted to play was âThumper.â Although, during the winter qtr, weâd play for shots of your favorite schnaps/cordial/digestif. I still have my two Univ. logo brandy snifters. Collecting dust now.
And what is that gentleman doing with Sun? He must be quite focused on her, given he doesnât realize his giving the crowd there some serious âplumberâs posteriorâŠâ ;-PPPP
âYou can DO and BE What YOU Choose,â Eh, Hideous Haircut Girl?
You Hear THAT, Bern? Remember THOSE Words Well so You can Explain to Your Hard Working, Downtrodden, BROKE, Parental Units, Who WERE Paying 14K a Semester for You to Be there, Why the Heck You got Kicked Outta College during the First Frigginâ Week, THANKS to a Bunch of Free-Loading Parasites!
Go Bernice! As to the guy and Sun, his head is clearly above her beltline (so far). And yes that room beats mine in college by a long shot but then again, homes on television shows are also way big.
I think Bernice would rather choose to study, get good grades, graduate and be an adult. These are not her friends, Dez is not there, the party group should have their party someplace else. Iâd like to see Bernice stand up for herself.
âCome to think of it, Viper. I came to school to be a vet or a counselor, not to get arrested. So yes, I do want to be a prude. Thank you for asking. Thereâs the door.â*I sure hadnât expected Bern to give up her goals so easily!
Greg is doing a great job creating arcs around Bernice. She used to be just a foil for Luann. Now she represents a more dimensional character learning about herself and finding her way in her first year away from home.
AWESOME!!!! Bernice is finally having fun!!! and we had loud dorm parties and the RA actually joined in!!! BTW the type of dorm she is living in has one central SHARED living space/bathroom area and then 2 smaller private bedrooms off of opposite sides. They donât sleep in the same room together. VERY different than traditional dorm rooms. Tiffany on the other hand doesnât share her living space, thatâs why itâs called a âsuiteâ
Here is my opinion for today:++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I really like the way Greg has drawn Bernice in the last panel. It is such a different posture for herâŠ. so relaxed and âliving in the momentâ with her dancing. It was a very happy image. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Thus far, I have not seen anything âtorridâ about any of the visible dorm neighbors. Viper, for all her severity⊠seems rather typical of a lot of kids trying on âdifferent hatsâ in life. Sun seems to be a fairly similar personality to BerniceâŠ. but a bit more relaxed⊠probably because she is (appears to be) a returning student. PiroâŠ. he is a bit more ambiguous, but seems RELATIVELY benign. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Dez, herself (presumed) is still the ambiguity. When Bernice sees her neighbors more than her room-mate, that is really the only issue. The ferret, the bags of stuffâŠ. all that, to me, will likely be red herrings. Dez is the one worrisome aspect. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++The âheavy metal rocker dudeâ (HMRD) is interesting in terms of drawing style as well. I wonder if he will become a regular⊠perhaps supplanting Knuteâs prior role if he is gone from the strip? Or, if Knute eventually shows up somewhere, will Knute and HMRD get along? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++In regards to âbreaking the rulesâ with the loud party. A) It would depend on how LOUD, loud is judged to be by the Resident Assistant (RA), B) even if it is too loud, the first step would be for the RA to talk to Bernice, and C) all would likely be fixed by simply turning it down and having everyone go home. This of course presumes that there will not be an extreme escalation of the story arc to something more illegal/dangerous. I doubt Greg would have an illegal/dangerous turn in mind hereâŠ. I suspect he is trying to depict a fairly normal (other than DEZ) college experience in the dorms.
In the university that my son is attending, you are allowed an individual microwave oven (up to 800 watts max) and a refrigerator up to 4.5 cu. ft. No propane or electric element stoves or hotplates are allowed. As he is a freshman, he is not allowed a car. I guess some students keep cars off campus somewhere, but that is frowned upon also.
Max fridge limit for my niece is 3.0cu ft. I got her a 1.7 cube mini fridge like I had. I donât think freshman were restricted from having cars on campus, and any one who was living âoff campusâ could have one. The problem was finding viable parking for students. Most of the parking lots around the dorms areas were for âfaculty and staff only.â Student lots were way off the beaten path.
Like I was saying previously, the kicker would be if âthe Big Kidâs Kool Aidâ (liquor) somehow crept in. When you have people you donât know in âyourâ party (and letâs remember that Bern is âletting looseâ in someone elseâs festivities, and itâs not even their room), itâs a potential problem. â And I think thatâs the other aspect to this- the fact that if (if) something happens here that violates the dorm rules (focusing more so on the âmore seriousâ ones), it will be Bern who will âget the blameââŠ..
Yeah, we got him a 4.3 cu. ft fridge with a crisper drawer and top freezer. The microwave actually is a 900 watt unit, but I used my heat gun to take such identifying labels off. If he was living here and commuting to campus, he could have a car, but living on campus, it is not permitted.
Iâm amazed it doesnât pop the circuit breakers for the room with either.
Yeah, 800wattsâŠ. why bother??? :)
Not that we needed a bunch of cooking stuff, as both the dorms I stayed in had their own caefeteriae (some smaller dorms did not). My first dorm, however, did not serve breakfast, only lunch and dinner. And there was no food service at all on Sundays. I ended up going on a breakfast contract with the dorm (big enough to serve breakfast) in which I eventually stayed for the remainder of my time there. I did have a Sunbeam âHot Shotâ beverage maker (the pre-historic version of this one . And I think the most illegal thing I had was an electric âhot dogâ cooker (i.e. the kind where you plug the frankâs end points on to the spikes on the bar, close the cover, and plug it into the wall, and it acts like the âelectric chairâ to hot dogs)âŠ. 8-O You had to watch that, as it had no "auto offâ switch⊠just a pan in the bottom for collecting the grease.
Man, did I ever live on hot dogs and ramen noodle cups at that time⊠:)
And notice the same âPrudeâ tactic used, and also the ânarrow escapeâ, and a part of the resolution⊠the rest of this arc is in*_October_* , 1987⊠â
Yes, we can see by the folks sheâs allowing to use her dorm room for a party and storage of questionable bags that she has already, uh, âchangedâ the âqualityâ of her friendsâŠ-Maybe it will once again be Luann who bails her out when the police get involvedâŠ
When my son was at Stanford for the summer session last year between his junior and senior year of high school, he had a very small electronic fridge. It held just 6 cans of soft drinks or whatever he could cram into it. Just off the recreation/lounge/piano area, they had a full kitchen that could be used if they wished. I did send with him a small âin cupâ water heater like this one:
Ah, the olâ âImersion Heater.â I used one of those in science class. Yeah, those were verboten also. Enough of an âopen coilâ to raise an issue.
I remember the hot dog cookers. I think I built one when I was about 12 or so. I took a piece of plexiglass, drilled a couple of holes in it for nails, and wired the nails to an AC cord. You just slid the hot dog down on to the nails and plugged it in. The hot dog heated up just like a resistor across the 120 volt AC line. They could be dangerous to use without the presence of common sense. But, then again, hot dogs themselves can be dangerous to eatâŠ
The one I owned had six barbs on each bar., a plastic drip pan, and a cover. It reminds me of one of those âGeorge Foremanâ cooker things, but before his âpitchâ time.
I think I did Kosher beef franks exclusively. I kinda liked the âsnapâ in them. Oh, I used to eat a ton of processed stuff. Not anymore. I really do miss âbacon.â :-)
Oddly enough, I used to travel to work on the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) âElâ lines, and one of them (the âRavenswoodâ/Evanston Express line â I donât know which color it is today â Evanston, obviously is âPurpleâ)⊠:-) â Right Argy? :-DDDD Anyway, it passed right through the main Oscar Meyer plant in Chicago. They donât call it âHog Butcher for the Worldâ for nothingâŠ.
Luann is going downhill. The story is tiresome, boring, unfriendly. The characters are grotesque and grossly unattractive. If this strip doesnât get back to what is was, it will lose the long-time loyal fan.
As he is a freshman, he is not allowed a car. I guess some students keep cars off campus somewhere, but that is frowned upon also.^^What a dumb rule, in Canada, things must be different, my Bro gave my nephew his old car and he drives home on long weekends and holidays.
The last time Quilly showed up, it was just the cardboard cutout Luann has of him. Hard to tell the difference, thoâŠ^^LOL!! The cutout has more personality
