I don’t see anything about Bernice that suggests that any part of her (‘zooidal spirit’ or anything else) is beaming. Too me, she looks like one of the kids who walked into our crisis switchboard years ago to confess that he had tried to kill himself, but couldn’t even succeed at that…

I haven’t been reading that long, but I’ve never seen Bernice’s mother or read any posts about her. So she would have to be introduced first for Bernice to start yelling at her.-I am seriously concerned that Bernice is reaching the end of her endurance. Too much ‘difference’ too fast can be more than some folks can handle.

Seeing the back of a character’s head is the equivalent of seeing the other high school students as silhouettes. They are only there as kind of a place marker to let readers know that others are part of the story only marginally. We see Mrs. Berger actually interacting with Gunther, so even though we disapprove of his yelling at her, we understand some of his anguish at being treated like he is still in grade school. But if all we get of a character is the back of their head, there’s no context to understand why they would suddenly be yelled at.-If anything, I’d expect a tearful Bernice to call her mother and ask if she could move home…

Man, people are being awfully judgmental of a person who is just a free spirit. Back when I was young, those of us who were more “square” often looked up to and wished we could be more like that. Some of us tried and failed, others, like me, tended to appreciate those free spirits even though I knew I would not naturally have that sort of ability myself. Dez is so far, a real breath of fresh air. I enjoy her greatly. Bernice, although a bit hesitant, is not being overly judgmental… she is being open to learning and seeing about Dez… which is a good thing. I think the two of them could have a very useful time learning a lot from each other.

I think Dez is a sweetie! She took time from her classes to help her ailing grandpa, and helps out other friends in need. She even bought a token of gratitude for Bernice, for her part in helping, and got it from her artist friend Viper, supporting her creations. I think this is about Bernice learning about people different from what she is used to, and not being judgemental about it. That would be a bad trait for a guidance counselor. There is nothing wrong with Dez or her friends.

I predict that she’s going to be Bernice’s Peru—the experience that compels Bernice to grow beyond her narrow comfort-zone and widen her horizons. Once Bernice catches up with Gunther (with help from Dez) they will be perfect for each other.

Dez is making sure that Bernice doesn’t feel like a doormat taking care of things for other students. So far Dez is a caring nice person not some self centered druggie.

The flight was long enough for Tiff to annoy Quill with her flirting.

No one has mentioned the use here of the word ‘zooidal’ which seems odd at best. It has nothing to do with the zodiac..DICTIONARYzooidal = of or pertaining to a zooid..zooid =(biology) An organic body or cell having locomotion, as a spermatic cell or spermatozoid.(zoology) An animal in one of its inferior or early stages of development, as one of the intermediate forms in alternate generation.(zoology) One of the individual animals in a composite group, as of Anthozoa, Hydrozoa, and Bryozoa; — sometimes restricted to those individuals in which the mouth and digestive organs are not developed..Can anyone make sense of this? Is that a caricature of a spermatic cell depicted on Bern’s head? Or is Dez just tongue-tied?

BTW, taking it that Pittsville (fictional) was same area as San Marcos, makes more sense(time wise) to drive directly to LAX than take a nonstop flight to Sidney than to go to San Diego, Santa Ana or Ontario for a one stop flight to Sidney (some flights going to San Francisco, or to Salt lake) but money wise(flights around same price and adding gasoline cost to drive to the airports) it makes more sense to go to San Diego

What is Dez doing in college, anyway? Everything she wants to learn could be taught by a shaman, witch doctor, or Voodoo instructor. The price per credit hour would be less and she wouldn’t take up space better used by someone hoping to learn something productive. I mean, come on, what good is majoring in Primitive Culture and practices? About as useful as psychology, sociology, philosophy. English Literature, and fine arts. Bernice will sink to the culture level of Dez before Dez rises to Bernice’s standards, so get ready for a barefoot Bernice beating on bongo drums.

Perhaps, you meant “last year…” (01/16/2014).

Yep. Tina Louise and Dawn Wells are the last survivors. And, most unfortunately, they can’t stand each other. So definitely no tributes to come there.

It made me think about “Hogan’s Heroes,” again. The only regular (or even semi-regular) surviving cast member now is Robert Clary (Le Beau). Quite an accomplishment, as he was also a Holocaust survivor. Much of his family were not so fortunate.
