If Luann has aged over the years (unlike other comic characters) shouldn’t Puddles have died of old age by now?

Question for the comic historian… Is puddles the only character in luann whose drawing hasnt evolved? Luann, frank, nancy all have much more nuanced drawing than early day strips (in addition to aging)

Brd, I am more awake today.Do not know if the project is large, small, done, or ongoing. Bit more Brd from search termJava ecology komodoThen fromisland effect evolution komodoThis one was surprisingly more detailed and referenced than i expected. Some of it may not be what is needed, but there are some gems:https://sites.google.com/site/indonesiakomodo/assignmentsGoing from a biology standpoint one thing that might be useful and fun for her could be to bring in that on islands both miniatures and giants tend to develop, the island effect on size, though aspects of how and when are still being investigated:http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/evolution/gigantism-and-dwarfism-islands.html https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071107074324.htmThat is a bit advanced for seventh grade but that is in somewhat plain language so you could both discuss it and use some main points. There is a reasonable amount of documentation of smaller than expected and larger than expected animals from islands (where a restricted breeding population allows unusual genetics of a population to drift more than it would in a place with a wider range of individuals in the gene pool). This study cited suggests there has to already be the tendency toward size change present and then ecological factors strong enough to produce the results. It is certainly possible to have mainland evolutionary “islands” where populations begin differing more from each other when breeding populations are cut off from each other in different ways, like when a river cuts itself a new bed in a flood separating populations, or even when human building separates populations. The latter is happening more than many realize. One thing to know about science is that people do debate concepts and variations on concepts, so that field of thought requires not treating things as dogma, but considering the possible strengths and weaknesses of ideas, as well as possible alternative explanations. Here is info on a different monitor which explains the earlier Egyptian name info:http://www.sccf.org/content/42/Nile-Monitor-Lizards.aspx

An extinct group of West Indian rodents […] weighed up to 440 pounds, or as much as an American black bear. As I understand it, they deduced this from the huge mouse holes depicted in a cache of prehistoric Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Before i got sick and had to cut short my education i was planning on looking into questions in evolution, working from a focus of mammals, especially primates, so once i woke up i figured that might be interesting for her. Plus, i was wondering why that one site yesterday mentioned an Egyptian origin for using the term “monitor” and not having much background in herps did not know of the lizard called the Nile Monitor, so i got to learn, too. Seventh grade on is a good time to be introduced to more serious refs so helping provide that felt good to me.I think the wording in Science Direct might have been a bit too strong since the quotes from the British researcher more refute that isolation itself coukd be enough. He says that there is needed input from other aspects such as a genetic tendency in that direction, or strongly selective environmental pressures.

Edit what i just wrote in your mind to say “isolation alone”, as in the island effect being a factor but not sufficient by itself.

One thing i found interesting is that there is debate whether the Komodo Dragon is a possible form of island giantism, or – given how huge some Australian possible relatives were per the Nova article – if they show island reduction in size.

—Proving that a man and a woman who have been married for over twenty years can still “get frisky”; especially when one of them (the woman: here, Nancy) is still a hottie (there’s another term that comes to mind but is probably inappropriate for this commentary; drink your milk, kiddies).

I agree. That sounds like a fine writing approach, and interest certainly is key. While i realize i gave her more work, i am hoping that having the immediate reward of an interesting concept, and the continuing rewards of devising useful search terms and weighing references help offset the added work upfront. I pretty much did what a librarian might do, no more, no less.

Oh, Chris, if your daughter wants to include more basic facts but is approaching her word limit she can have a Bullet Points Section that just contains some bare bones info. That is a handy technique used for magazine articles.
