To angelfiredragon from yesterday “I’ve been told they always have a large amount of people calling in sick on Friday nights and Saturdays, which is the time I can shop.”

We have plenty of call-ins on weekends and the young people who refuse to work weekends. Mostly the young college kids (some in high school too) who have no work ethics and don’t really care if they lose their jobs for poor attendance because they still have mom and/or dad supporting them. But your wait time in the checkout lines in inexcusable. They need to hire and schedule more cashiers. And when they have too many call-ins, MANAGERS need to step up to the plate and cashier a while.

I don’t understand today’s strip. When they say “poll tax”. are hey referring to “stripper poles?” I’m confused.

A word from the History Teacher – A “poll” tax was used to prevent the poor (mostly black) people from voting. A “pole” tax (pronounced the same) is the joke about adult entertainment.

Many white bosses gave their white employees a bonus or a temporary “raise” just before election day to allow them to vote.

Huh, I thought it was what you would use to put up yard sale and lost dog signs.

I can see why so many didn’t get this toon; I didn’t make the switch to “pole”, either. But what occurs to me is, why do we pronounce “poll” like “pole”? We don’t pronounce “ball” the same as “bale”. And I’ve never heard anyone say “Pole-y wanna cracker?”.

English is a mixture of words and pronunciations from many languages with nobody authorized to insist on how it can be spoken. One good result is flexibility in thinking.

Women use poles as props while dancing in strip clubs to sexually arouse men for money.

(This also requires flexibility.)

I think a lot of people got the pole dancer thing as a possibility. The problem was that it’s not even within shouting distance of being remotely amusing. So people looked for another explanation that would be funny.

Oh well, another day, another joke.

Actually, “Poll” is a triple joke. One being the stripper pole. One being the guy’s pole. And the third being a play on words since the word “poll” was another name for “head”.
