I have been waiting forever to see if Prudence knows anything about her acting profession (off panel dramatic presentations do not count) and finally we may get the chance to see her in action.
The idea of Les and Pru staging a public breakup for the benefit of Mrs. Berger and Mr. Gray seems kind of stupid to me.
Les already told Mrs. Berger that Pru was not his girlfriend, so if they now announce that they are breaking up, that will tip off Mrs. Berger that either he was lying before or he is lying now. Since Mrs. Berger seems to be a bit too intrusive into Les’s personal life already, there’s no point in piquing her interest even further.
Meanwhile, I doubt that Mr. Gray would make fun of Les because his supposed girlfriend is actually a lesbian. Rather, Mr. Gray thinks Les is wasting his money in general and not making the payments he is legally required to make. Mr. Gray would probably take just as tough a line with Les if Les were spending his money trying to romance a heterosexual woman.
I got nothing guys believe it or not. It worked out like milquetoast. I still think there is more though, although I am not quite ready to get into Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger. Pru is a very calming person. On the public breakup? Stay tuned.
I don’t have a problem with most of this strip. I keep coming back because I like it. Sometimes it’s a little slow as it takes forever with what seems like a simple story.
During scenes between Pru & Les, I think there were other people present in KK – and they notice stuff. I’m not going with nobody knows except Gunther, Ma and Mr. Gray. However if Pru delivers a good breakup scene – maybe everybody will buy it.
Some of us had worried about Les retaliating against Pru over the upset and rejection, but now I think that issue is nil. Pru has agreed to return the necklace, and she is helping Les save face as well as she can. Les is likely to think of her as his best friend from now on.
Some also expressed hope that Pru can more fully rehabilitate Les. Maybe, but I’m not currently holding my breath on that one. He may end up in the slammer anyway.
Some people may complain that the strip displays smaller in this new format rework. But I’ve noticed some fixes/improvements as well:
(1) The “Flag” button now alternately turns red or white when you click it, so you can see when you’ve flagged or unflagged a comment.
(2) The input text boxes for comments and replies are now expanding vertically as you type, so you can see most or all of your comment. It was showing only one line at a time.
(3) The scripts to support the reply links seem to be downloading more reliably, so there’s less likelihood of errors if you click on one too soon.
A late occurring thought for those suggesting that Les is beyond redemption, or unworthy of it, or undeserving of kindness from anyone. Remember Dirk? His physical violence? His stalking of Toni? The fact that Brad had to take out a restraining order against him? His ending up in jail? And remember how he finally turned out? After an anger management course, he calmed down, married, had a child, and apparently became a respectable citizen. Of course, I’ve seen this in real life too, so I know it happens. My point is that we’ve seen it in the Luann Universe too.
Another thing I thought of, even if Pru wasn’t a lesbian…isn’t she in her thirties? Les is barely out of high school, the age difference is just weird.
The thing that still hasn’t been addressed is that Les stole the money he used to buy the necklace on the ploy that he was collecting it for the kids theater group. I don’t think it would be right for that story line to just disappear. Other than that, I have been enjoying this arc.
I bet Pru has had to do more than a few heterosexual breakup scenes in her acting career, so this should be good. Then, after whatever big scene is going to happen next, I am looking forward to having Pru help rehabilitate Les into a respectable person. After all, they still do work together, and even in just that day-to-day setting, her influence will be felt. Les might not realize it now, but he needs someone like her.
@Tyge: It’s not the Tin Man that’s close … it’s Jon Lovitz! Les keeps playing the “Tommy Flanagan, Pathological Liar” character … and now Prudence is the “Master Thespian”. And the only way out of THIS spot is – ACTING!!! (Yeah, that’s the ticket!).
Now the way I see it “Uncle Al,” you got TWO employees goofing off, but only Les gets Yelled at. Yeah, that’s “fair.”
Besides Al, Ma Berger, (the woman impatiently waiting in silhouette in panel two) the lady You “romance,” is Your girlfriend, so why don’t You get Her Friggin’ tea???
I hope, though, that it is “public” only in front of Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger. If others in the Luaniverse are included, this could further complicate matters for Pru in regards to those that know she is homosexual, and also complicate matters for Pru in regards to those who do not know she is homosexual.
If others than Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger see the public breakup, or if the very talkative Mrs. Berger reports the breakup to others (I guess Mr. Gray could potentially report of the break up to others as well, but it does not seem likely given his personality.) then there could be a whole lot of misconceptions that develop.
I can’t believe G.E. had Pru say she’d give the necklace back, talk about enabling someone who has them self in a mess knowing damn well they put them self in that mess…..It’s about time for Les’s lies and schemes to surface and Les needs to haul his own butt out of the fire he createdI’m ready for Les to move to another country or end up in jail and leave the strip
Maybe Pru will add some fun to this arc of B characters. In the meantime, I can hope that Tiffany and Gunther can take it up a notch, and give us a little romance……….if only for a little while.
Hmmmm. Why not just, “We are not a romantic couple, just close friends.” Big efforts to “save face” often fail to do that, but actually lower self-esteem. Les needs to get over this feeling of intrinsic worthlessness, more than anything else. But we’ll see.
Why would they have to stage a fake break up? No one knows Les’ true intentions, except Pru. Mrs. B thinks Les is dating someone else. If they were to “break up” that would be more confusing to all. They should just continue to be friends.
I doubt that Mr. Gray or Gunther care about the personal life of Les at all. They have no interest in who he is dating. And just because Mr. Gray knows Les pursued Pru does not mean he thinks they are dating. No need for a “break up” at all.
The question may become, at some time in the future, does Prudence use this as leverage over Les? “You owe me” type of thing. Won’t speculate in what context it may come up, but it’s a possibility.
Why would Pru stage a “breakup” scene if they (supposedly) are not even seeing each other? Either she wants to expose him as a liar or she misses performing on the stage.
interesting how the first thing Les thinks of is the necklace and how much he had to pay for it… taking it back? well that was low hanging fruit… Hey Les ‘money can’t buy you love…’… so another thing you can fix is your attitude. I am curious as to what he will do with the necklace once back in his possession.
In my zeal to be a conscience on the issue of gay shaming, or whatever a few troll comments were, I allowed my lack of empathy for the gift of the necklace to be deaf. I think returning the necklace is absolutely the right thing, and the way it was done, with her offering to return it as part of repairing the damage, and salvaging his feelings is great. I didn’t think she had to return it because she did not know it was given as a romantic token, but offering to give it back is a very good thing to do. I should have been more sensitive to that ethical point: imagine in comics!! I really want to see the acting in the great break-up scene.
Lord, Pru. You are not making Les be accountable for his telling people she was his girlfriend when she never was. You are making light of this and turning it into a fun adventure. What will Les learn from this? Nothing. Because you let him off the hook too easily without consequence. You would do Les better by going to Mrs. Berger and apologize for your role in leading Les to think she was interested in her and that she was never his girlfriend. Yes, it will embarrass Les, but that will teach him not to do that to another girl, hetero or gay. Teach him what is the proper way to court a girl, which includes letting the girl know he is interested in her and getting the message across loud and clear, and make sure whether the girl returns the sentiment before going any further. I think Pru simply rather let people think she’s hetero and play a break up scene than revealing her true self and face a stigma in a small town. Cowardly.
