If Tiffany were doing to Bernice what Bernice is now doing to her, wouldn’t most people herein be clamoring for Tiff to be burned at the stake, or something?
Tiffany – Please don’t disappoint us! You are supposed to be getting smarter. At the very least – Tiff should go looking for her phone and see that Bernice has it and is examining the calls. She has to remember what Bernice wants. I hate to see Tiffany so rattled that she goes for all this for fear of a thief.
@Luanaphile Those drawn to astrology have a neurotic need for an explanation of random events, where none exists. Many studies show that people use “bias confirmation” to credit astrology with imaginary successes.
I could argue to the contrary from my own studies and experiences, but I think the following anecdote is most appropriate for this forum:
One of the world’s greatest scientists, Sir Isaac Newton, believed in astrology, as well as certain other aspects of mysticism. When asked about the fact that some of his scientific peers scoffed at him over his esoteric beliefs, his reply was, “I have studied these things and they have not.”
Unfortunately, people who never have looked into esoteric studies (astrology, reincarnation, etc.) with at least an open enough mind to study with others and see what gives, then all they pay attention to is the pompous voices of the “scientific” naysayers. This becomes an ego trip for these unbelievers, and the way they cling to it I’d call “neurotic”.
I used to really like Bernice, but over time I have seen so many character flaws…she is really not a nice person. Tiffany, as shallow as she is, is actually a much nicer human being!
Obviously Piro guards his privacy. Does Bernice really think calling him is going to help her get close to him? Maybe she should have gotten to know him BEFORE she let him sleep at her place. Bernice is now my LEAST favorite character, including Eiffel & the guy that used to keep his stash in her locker.
You know I argue that calling what Bernice is doing stalking is inappropriate, and I hold to that argument. However, and I am fully aware of her BFF status to Luann, and as someone said yesterday, she is a main protagonist in the toon, but I don’t like what she is doing to get the phone number. It’s using her position unethically, something those of us in college education are aware we need to stress more with our students, in business for example to try to prevent the kind of greed storm we had back in the early 2000s ,but sorry off the soapbox! It’s also stressing TIffany unnecessarily, I mean having a college age daughter myself I would be scared if she called me to tell me that things were being stolen out of dormitory. For Bernice to profit off of this fear is worse than what Les does. Now we know that Les has an interesting backstory, but Bernice is just a neurotic romantic, whose ethics are very iffy. Bern come to your senses!
So if she’s successful and she gets the number out of Tiffany’s phone, then what? If I even picked up a number I didn’t recognize on my phone I would want to know how this person got my number. This has the potential to get ugly. And I will be here “watching.”
Maybe Tiff will catch Bern in the act and report her to the campus cops for breaking into her cell phone and to the Housing Authority for abusing her R.A. job. Bern will get expelled from Moony and turned out by her parents. Now homeless, she and Piro can look for places to crash together!
Is Tiffany the only resident Bernice is demanding a list from? If so, she’ll find herself in a lot of trouble. Her obsession with Piro is as bad and as ill-advised as Les’ obsession with Pru. Both wanted people they knew too little about.
With so many of Dez’ friends being well acquainted with Piro (pjɛʁo), her obscession with (now feloniously) “stealing” the phone number from Tiffany instead of simply asking one of them is positively mental.
Greg’s stereotype characters make me wonder about their real life equivalents, female and male, from my own dark ages. Did that cute little girl, with the delicious giggle, end up in some 2nd rate subdivision with 3 or 4 kids, or did she become the trophy wife of an aspiring politician? Did that over confident, pretty boy actually go to a race car driving school in Europe, or is he hustling used cars for some big dealership in the U.S.? Greg’s stereotypes are real in one sense, their future is uncertain, and their happiness has no guarantees. So, I cheer for Tiffany and hope that Greg gives her a fair shake.
Oh, Bernice, when will you learn? If Piro was interested in you he would’ve given you his phone number, or asked for yours. Give it up. Betcha Tiffany will discover Bernice trying to look into her phone.
Bernice is flat out lying when she tells Tiffany she is there to prevent someone breaking into the dorm and track stolen goods. While it doesn’t hurt to have a property inventory, Bernice’s version of trust is a one-way street in this case.
I’ve been casually following Luann for years after being given an appreciation for newspaper comics by TCC but this strip finally pushed me to make an account here. I’m young enough that newspapers became entirely irrelevant long before I hit my teens but old enough that I still occasionally had access to one to read the comics as a young child so my perspective as someone who started reading while I was of similar age to the cast and haven’t yet aged out of being part of the same generation…. this is super creepy and Bernice needs a massive reality check that what she’s doing is shady and high skeez for everyone involved.
What makes it worse is her supposed career path really hinges on having a degree of intellectual and emotional maturity that I’ve honestly never seen from her. Yes, before it was Luann who was so silly and impulsive that Bern BY COMPARISON was reasonably responsible but the key words being ‘by comparison’. I remember a lot of the plotlines involving her throughout the years generally have her as behaving pretty irrationally and with a petty intent. (Thinking specifically of the brother she found out she had and how that storyline developed.)
So yeah, this is not okay in any sense of the word and I’m kind of glad that it is thoroughly unlikely that there’s that many kids left that still read comic strips because if this doesn’t end up rightfully blowing up in her face or being contextually acknowledged as being terrible, well… Fail.
I dislike Bernice’s tactics here, even though I know they are meant for comedic effect. The way most of her “over-the-top” antics when the occur during the last 2-3 years are IMHO really an homage of sorts to the classic “I Love Lucy” story lines. I could see just about each and every “over-the-top” antic of Bernice being pretty much the same thing that Lucy would have done on the show.
And, MOST of the time, this sort of homage plays very well and I am glad Greg has been doing this for its comedic potential with Bernice. It is classic, and it usually works!
But, this particular arc about duping or distracting Tiffany so Bernice can get the phone number just feels kind of mean and stupid for Bernice. I do not like Bernice being mean to Tiffany, and I still think Bernice could have found a better/easier way to get the number (like having Dez as Chugg, or Dez asking Tiffany for Bernice).
I do understand this is fiction, but when I was in the dorm at college if an RA had pulled this and gotten caught they would have been fired and kicked out of the dorms, along with being put on Academic probation (if not expelled). I don’t know what’s going on with Bern, but she needs to get her head on straight and learn how to just talk to a boy if she thinks he’s cute.
No doubt that Bernice has some neurotic tendencies. But that would normally be countered by others who manifest healthy boundaries. It would be refreshing if Tiffany were to say, “Well, you are not going to rifle through my belongings, today, Bernice. Has the dorm facilitator really asked you to do this? You shouldn’t be a party to violating the privacy of dorm residents.” Of course, this would not be the language that Tiffany would use. At age 18 – 70, these things are still being learned.
I am sort of losing respect for Bernice at this point. Also I suspect Tiffany is not so much interested in Piro as she is running interference for Gunther who wants Bernice for himself. Tiffany has already shown us she can be a good friend to Gunther.
I’m still interested in Piro, and finding out what his backstory is. But I hope there’s a way to do that without involving Bernice, since it’s becoming almost painful to follow her act right now…
Since Bernice has now gotten into crazy territory, can I sing this?
“And. . .they’re coming to take me away, ha-haaa/They’re coming to take me away, hoo-hoo, hee, hee, haaa, haaa/To the funny farm/Where they take crazy people like me/Who take someone’s cell phone/To look up the number of a guy I’m obsessed with/And has a star on the side of his head/They’re coming to take me away!!!”
I see only two ways to redeem this story line: 1) Bernice has a fit of conscience and confesses to Tiffany what she’s really up to; or 2) Bernice gets caught and faces some real consequences.
I don’t I like these arcs very much. I don’t want to read about stalking and theft and all that stuff in a comic strip. There’s too much of that in the real world. It almost feels like somebody else is writing the strip these days, and I don’t think I like it.
