Les: “Pru, you’ve got it all wrong. The kids’ theater is a charitable project. It’s not supposed to raise money for the Fuse, which is a business. (It’s supposed to raise money for me.)”
Lesley’s right. If you can get at least one kid to act well enough so that she can make people think she thinks Luann’s jokes are funny, then you have the makings of a first rate actress.
This is a life lesson arc I think but am still trying to figure out the lesson. It’s interesting that Leslie is encouraging Pru, who was so excited about the program, but pointing out that Luann and Fay are happy. What the outcome of this and what is all means is something I am hesitating to cogitate on. Lets give it a couple or few more days. Hmmmm.
Maybe Les can break out his guitar, and play “Every Rose Has Its’ Thorn” for Pru. That ought to break through the clouds, and produce a smile upon her face! If she still doesn’t cheer up, just take a deep breath, and then its’ on to the song “Patience”. If she still isn’t responding… well, there’s Quick Draw McGraw…
Hopefully Fay has friends and she talks them into coming. It showed her mother first day and I’m sure the stage mother is NOT going to let this be the end.
Pru needs to remember that not everybody wants to grow up to be like her. An out of work actor waiting tables for a living. Some of us are realistic about our futures.
We learned three things today. One, Pru has a pathological need to please other people. We’ve seen it since she first appeared, helping the Degroots and Luann and anyone who needed it. Two, Luann will one day be a great teacher. Though now we see she may do well in a Middle School or High School setting. Instead of getting down about the failure of the class she is making certain her one student is happy and motivated. Three, and most surprising, Leslie can actually be a decent human being. Making Jonah and biggest loser and low life in this comic.
I mentioned ‘teary-eyed’ in regard to Prudence last week, and here we are. Also, the ‘one victory’ being worth it moment has arrived. Someone else noted Luann’s desire for a young sis … liking where this is going, and hoping that Fay sticks around.
Well, for one thing the kids’ theater project should have started off with way more than $37 in the fund. See the strip for 7/30/2016. The money raised at the talent show could have been used for advertising to publicize the theater camp.
As I take my coffee and pipe break, I am again surprised by several events related to the story arc’s progression today:
1. Les appears to be having a genuinely kind moment in his trying to point out to Pru how Fay is enjoying the interaction. At this point, I would very much like to believe this is an honest and genuine act from Les. While it is hard to trust Les due to his past, perhaps this is the birth of a kinder, more mature Les? Doubtful, but we can hope.
2. With all of her qualities thus far shown, it is really surprising a) how poorly Pru (primarily while Luann was secondary) planned this camp. From what we have seen of Pru in the past, it seems she should have known far better how to get things organized and orchestrated for success. That she has had a major miss-step here, and with her sadness about this miss-step…. it makes me again wonder what is up here in terms of Greg’s plan. It seems far-fetched to me, but might Greg be guiding us on a path where Pru ends up leaving? I hope not, because I have enjoyed her as an addition to the comic. But, perhaps that is what this arc is about.
3. While I am actually liking the character of Fay quite a bit, I am having a hard time envisioning any real route for her to become a long-term character. Unless (as some have suggested) Greg tries to incorporate her as a “Cousin Oliver” type character, it seems difficult to have her be around much after the camp. And, I sincerely doubt Greg would stoop to writing in a “Cousin Oliver” because it is too contrived. So, I suspect that Fay will be only a momentary character.
4. I wonder if Luann is “working” at The Fuse Theater Camp or if she is only “volunteering” at The Fuse Theater Camp? To me, it would be an interesting thing to know because while this week has highlighted Luann’s ability to interact well with teens (and kids, as we know from Shannon and Luann’s daycare job), she has not really shown much care or interest….
… in the “number crunching” more “work” related aspects of the camp at The Fuse. And, in general, she seems to be pretty much “hands-off” in regards to most things related to The Fuse…. even though it is a family business. Her being so care-free about The Fuse just seems a little different than I would have expected her to be.
I guess this is about all I can postulate about within today’s comic. I am going to finish my pipe and have a last swallow of coffee and head back to work.
I feel like Greg is copying Jonah’s character when he made Axel. Axel is a sleaze (which Toni and Brad has described Jonah as many times), he is quite selfish, he doesn’t think about others (Jonah constantly pushes Shannon onto Toni, so he doesn’t think about others either), has the same blond hair, and overall just a teenage version of Jonah.
Can the leopard change his spots? Can Leslie Knox turn good? Or is he a Character, an exemplar of a type, like so-called Characters in the ancient Greek literary genre? Beware, Pru!
Meanwhile, Luann and Fay are getting along well. Fay could be a nice younger friend for Luann in the longer run, if she doesn’t disappear from the cast of this comic strip….
Pru: What a disaster! I wanted to amass money for the theater, not lose it.
Pru: There should be 100 children here now, playing games, learning to act, having fun like crazy! But I ruined it.
Pru: I disappointed everyone!
Les: Hey, Pru? Not everyone.
(sound effect: Hahahahahaha)
The main difference is that in the Spanish version, Pru says she wanted to raise money for the theater, not for the Fuse, which actually makes more sense than the English version.

Your sentences are still scrambled as they were before. Some things never change. Well, Donny, since you asked, I signed in on this board in February of 2012. In August of last year, I had almost 25,000 comments. Night Gaunt had over 220,000 comments. My comments dropped down to about 380, and Night Gaunt’s dropped down to a little over 1,500. Just like that. GoComics had a server problem and many of people’s comments disappeared as a result. Not because we were banned or kicked off the board like you were. And were again. And again. So, yep, it is still me. Not Brdshtt 2 or any other new name like you have done so many times in the past, scrambling to get back on the board after being booted.

Uh, Pru? You might wanna check to See if you’re still wearing the jewelry you put on this morning. Check your purse, too.
Oh, it’s nothing Really. It’s just that things seem to go “missing” when certain “employees” who’s initials are “L/K” are ummmm, “working.”
