As predicted, we get a makeover. Itâs a good thing Fay is old enough to have experienced British drama, or Luann would be having a hard time now. Thank you Downton Abbey!!
What Fay is going through is not a âmakeoverâ. This is what drama school does; gives wanna be actors the chance to play other characters, which also helps those who suffer from shyness. Itâs not about attracting Axel or anyone else. Itâs about teaching her to stop âfading awayâ into shyness. Getting involved in âbeingâ another character brings a person out of herself or himself, and into the role. And when a person acquires that skill as part of playing a role, they can also use that skill in their own livesâŠ
Iâm still envisioning Fay in shredded jeans â fluorescent light green tennies, silver belt, black tee with small emblem (maybe a heart behind bars), purple shades. Keep the pigtails.
@SallyMargaret: If Iâm not mistaken, Cat Stevens was born a Greek Orthodox Christian. Then he converted to Islam. I donât understandâŠ
Iâm with you on that. There are other things that are hard to figure. Thereâs a young Catholic priest who regularly writes op-ed pieces in my local city paper. He previously was an Episcopal priest, and is married with kids. He converted to Catholicism, and could keep his wife and family under their transfer program. But itâs hard for me to understand anything that looks like going backward. He seems to appreciate his family, but now is supporting a denomination that generally bars priests from what he enjoys.
Of course, I was raised Christian (Disciples of Christ), and left it for personal studies in Kabbalah, reincarnation, and other mystical systems. I see it as clearly forward for myself, but others will sneer. Câest la vie.
Consciousness is very complex, personal, and interesting.
@SukieCrandall: Wiz, i will say this briefly: in todayâs Maris poll most Americans said that the WSTs should have been soecifically mentioned and firmly admonished, and even most Trump supporters questioned want the murderer to also be charged with terrorism in addition to murder and the other crimes committed.
Just in case the discussion yesterday left any doubts on my personal stances:
While I adamantly criticized anti-Semitism â I also adamantly reject all neo-Nazis and any other organizations and individuals who are anti-Semitic. (You canât be a Nazi without being an anti-Semite.)
I also agree completely that the murderer should be charged with terrorism, as well as with murder.
Nevertheless, Iâm fully with the Chief in spreading around some of the blame. Itâs my understanding that the counter protesters did not have a permit, as the original group did. And frankly when a very idealistic group decides to confront an opposing group in public, theyâre positively fishing for trouble.
It would be far better for people on opposing sides of political issues to stage separate demonstrations at different places or times. That would let everyone get their messages across, and avoid such bloody confrontations. Any group who does not follow this policy is actively looking for trouble. In this case, they attracted a deranged maniac who staged a mass attack with his car.
Others on the right-wing side of the rally are not responsible for the terroristâs behavior, because they did not put him up to it. And they would not have wanted it, because it hurts their cause.
If we blame all the right-wing groups for the terroristâs actions, then weâd have to blame all Muslims for the actions of a Muslim terrorist. And weâd have to blame all Democrats and liberals for the man who recently shot up Republicans at a softball practice. That kind of misplaced blame is nuts, and is just an excuse to point fingers at others with whom one disagrees.
The problem is, itâs not the real Fay, just a façade. Axel probably wears one, too. Eventually theyâll discover that the person on the inside must shine through or will surface in timeâthey might find that the ârealâ Axel and Fay have a lot in common.
Itâs not a makeover. Itâs learning how to be different characters- like when you tread books to children. Acting involves becoming and fully adapting another personality. I think this is really cute.
I am very glad that there appears to be at least a brief reprieve from focusing on getting âAxelâ to notice her. I think Luann is doing a nice job here. Interestingly enough, the getup that Fay is wearing from the costume wardrobe immediately had me think of Eliza Doolittle in âMy Fair Ladyâ. And, in some ways, Luannâs mentor role with Fay IS a bit like that film (yes, there are plenty of differences too⊠including Luann is not being gruff and a âknow-it-allâ like Professor Higgins).
But, where to now in the story? I havenât a clue.
Too many storylines going on hereâŠShannon/Jonah, The Fuse/Ann Eiffel/Les, Luann/Fay, Brad/ToniâŠnot to mention Tiffany and Gunther must have disappeared for the summer. And the abandoned ones: TV thief, Luann/Jock that broke her toe, Bernice/Guy with Star on his head. Just too much.
Does anyone recall maybe two or three years ago when a shy comments list member was asking for suggestions on being less shy and multiple members here suggested doing exactly this to find how (and practise) being more outgoing and making it a habit? As one guy put it: âBe it to become it.â
It was actually getting wrangled into taking a role in a play (Wanda in âEnter Laughingâ) which got me past my shyness as a teenager, so i know this approach can work.
I really think the Evanses got their idea from the discussion here in the comments section back then since Karen is said to sometimes read the comments (and another times she highlighted the great chapter titles of Jay Blue in their Luann Facebook page one day, talking about how they enjoy those, so they must read the comments sometimes). This all makes me wonder if there are any other ideas which will flow years or months later (given lead-times) from the comments, or if the commentors and the Evanses just sometimes have cool âgreat minds thinking alikeâ situations arise.
Building self-confidence has to work on the inner person. A change of clothes, whether a costume or not, will not help the essential problem here, much less solve it. A ditz like Luann who doesnât even know who she herself is, is no position to help Fay. If anything, she should send her over to Bernice, who at least is a psych major.
I already said in reply that I think Argy hit the nail on the head with this arc. I just want to see what happens with some of the other arcs that some fellow commenters have mentioned. I know I say patience with Luannverse, but Greg and Karen drop some of those balls okay?!!
The clothes make the man. They also make the woman out of Fay. Itâs like a superheroic transformation from everyday Fading Fay to LADY SNOOTLY, the bold alpha-personality!
If this works, Luannâs stock goes way up in my estimate.
Why does the Fuse have a large collection of costumes? Itâs a performance venue, but it doesnât have a theater production company in residence as far as I know.

Lady Snootly is a good choice, because someone like that would have no intention to waste her time by pursuing Axel.

This is a dull storyline. Most of the summer the focus has been on little kids with problems, such as Fay and Toniâs niece. Tedious.
