Yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you, Frank.
And way to go on failing to discipline your daughter. This goes for parenting or any other type of supervisory role: never let your subordinate get away with acting like they’re “doing you a favor” by doing what they’re already supposed to do. If they even look like they’re trying that angle, shut it down. In other words: Luann cleaning her room isn’t supposed to be a present, but rather the expected standard of behavior. Frank needs to nip that attitude in the bud or she’ll just get worse and worse. It’s never too late to teach that lesson; I only had it spelled out to me after I joined the army.
Luann’s dirty room is a long-standing joke in this strip, usually in some Sunday episodes.
But I’m surprised that the Evanses used it for Luann’s gift to her father. That seems really lame as a Christmas gift. She should have given him something personal.
This choice of “gift” (not the dirty room, itself) makes Luann look really bad. I’ve always felt she was bland and a little stupid, and sometimes amusing. But I’m almost beginning to share some of Ringo’s sentiment about her.
Oh Good GAW, How Insincere and CHEAP can Your Daughter BE, Frank?
Tell You what. Wait a day or two, until that Stupid Sign comes down, then take pictures of Luann’s “Pig Sty.”
Hang on to those pictures unti Luann has kids of Her Own, and She starts Berating THEM about Cleaning Up THEIR Rooms. Give those Pics to the Grandkids to illustrate “Parental Hypocrisy,” then Enjoy Your Daughter’s Embrassment.
Rosette, I like the strip okay? I don’t spend my brief time on it, including commenting here, finding phantom things to critique. I could critique your comments, and I have, but on this puerile comment, I will just use the Latin phrase “res ipsa loquitur”.
Stupid gift, stupid problem for a woman her age to still have to struggle with. Luann, it’s high time you grew up and acted your age. You’re what — 22? 23? — Time to stop spinning your academic wheels, quit that non-college you go to, and go get a job. And I don’t mean that nonsensical couple of hours a week at the library helping kids, which isn’t actually a job that pays anything anywhere in the world (Generally handled by volunteers anywhere…). Seriously when will this strip grow up?
It won’t be a gift until it gets done. Promises are worthless until fulfilled.
I did this once when I was a teenager. I practically scrubbed the room and even put things where they belong instead of shoving them under the bed or in the closet. My mom wasn’t impressed, mostly because I had rearranged the furniture and managed to put a huge scratch in the hardwood floor.
You’re all missing the “Gift” from the receivers perspective. Dad is most pleased with his daughters acknowledgement that she FINALLY understands the room needs to be cleaned! His little girl is finally growing up like everyone else in the Strip. All of us identify with at least one character in Luann which is why we are hooked. From a parents perspective we see the family growing up before our eyes and we can relate. But just think about this; although the transformation of Brad and , his marriage has been fun to follow, how many of us would enjoy the character more if he remained the pesky, clumsy teenager anyone could relate to? Be careful what you wish for with Luann, when she gets older her innocence dies with her aging. As a dad with six grown kids with kids it’s sad in a way that the innocence is gone. Happy New Year to all ya’all!
Clean it first, Lu! Otherwise that sign will simply hang there forever! Then you gift Frank the pleasure of seeing it clean. And keep it clean as well!
Luann’s gift will be a string leading to a sign that says, “We will pay your tuition and fees, provided you regularly clean and help out around the house.”
maybe Frank’s response ‘best gift ever’ is really sarcasm directed at his view of the bed and floor; he seems to be looking in that direction and not at her poster.
To the Luann the literal character fans: Be sure you understand this strip is no longer about Luann. Stop with the “Why do you come here if you don’t like Luann?” They come here to read not just for Luann but many other characters, like myself. I am not the literal Luann fan. I find her boring and bland and immature for her age and today’s strip shows that. She is 20 and she still doesn’t clean her room and thinks cleaning her room is a gift? And I bet you she got her idea spontaneously from Toni when she gifted Brad with an oil change and ran to her room and told her dad his gift is a clean room. What?? No direct benefit or gain for Frank other than a peek into a clean room. That is vastly different from the oil change gift. Goes to show how immature Luann is – which is why she went to the archery range with Tara – due inability to think like a mature person. I can go on and on but I think you get the point. Yes, you think she is adorable in that way, and okay, good for you. I come here to read about the others who are far more interesting than your beloved Luann. So, stop with the “stop coming in here if you don’t like Luann.” It is getting old.
