If it brings about faster than light travel, he’s right.

Newtonian physics didn’t fall, our knowledge base was simply expanded.

The washing machine. The inventor should be sanctified.

Perhaps they should be renamed “Newton’s Guidelines of Physics.”

So Einstein is Arlo’s hero. I’m impressed. Or maybe he’s just playing the onw-up game with Janis.

Teachers play the one-up game with regularity. “So class, what did we learn today?” Chances are that they have a particular answer chosen and probably no one will discern it.

INDOOR PLUMBING, CENTRAL HEATING/AIR CONDITIONING AND HOUSES TO HOLD THEM. We do Revolutionary War reenacting: believe you me, you do not take these for granted after thunderstorms, unexpected heat waves and running out of drinking water because of said unexpected heat waves!!! Oh! And having the temp suddenly decide to drop to below-freezing overnight, because an unexpected COLD FRONT decided to drop in. You get a whole new take on modern amenities, reellee fast!!!

Cooling systems/air conditioning. So many humans would not have willingly migrated to hot climates without them.

Although Maxwell’s equations in the 19th century and Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity and quantum mechanics in the early 20th century all showed that Newtonian physics doesn’t always hold, I suspect what Arlo is referring to is Bell’s theorem (1964) which showed that reality is non-local (i.e., “spooky action at a distance” does in fact happen). That would have been within Arlo’s lifetime, wouldn’t it? After all, Janis mentions the moon landings (1969 – 1972) and the Internet, which came into being in 1969.

IMHO it was the dishwasher. Can’t forget vacuums either. Still washers and dryers are right up there with A/C and central heating.

I think the single most important invention during the 20th century is the transistor. All those other things just improved an existing way of life. The transistor made things possible that we never knew about before.

Hmmm, Arlo likes Einstein’s improvement on Newtonian physics. Einstein developed the theory of relativity where one part of it shows that as matter speeds up to approach the speed of light, time slows down. And the Strip ‘Arlo and Janis’ certainly is moving at a totally different time increment than our world. Sort of like Gasoline Alley (but definitely NOT like Dondi). Now I can see why. btw, I have son with a daughter in high school and a daughter with toddlers and I was born in ’47. Arlo could easily be 70 with Gene being married and a step daughter around 10-12…hair color not withstanding.

This is not within my lifetime, but I want to mention what I think are the greatest inventions of all time: a sewage system and a clean, safe water supply.
