Those are all very good questions. I think it’s a self-esteem thing; knowing that you deserve a good partner who will always respect you, and resolving to settle for nothing less!
I thought he’d ponder how angry and confused he was at Allyson for lying to him. Instead it seems he actually cares for Allyson, and is pretty concerned about her. That’s part of the reason I like Gordon. . . He’s loving no matter how unloving the people around him.
Maybe the boyfriend treats her like her father does…. I’ve found that’s often the case with women who choose poorly. If her dad is a charming/handsome asshole, then the daughter goes for guys just like him. It’s a father-figure dilemma. :\
It is hard to watch the one you love trampled by a rival. It happens all the time. He has something that attracts her, and usually it is something you will never understand. Don’t worry, you will find someone to trample you soon enough.
At that age, many girls like the bad boy. But after they marry one and divorce follows, the NEXT guy is usually the sweetheart. Of course, Gordon, it sucks to have to wait 20 more years….
The last time I went to a movie theatre, there was hardly anyone there. You didn’t have to worry about finding a good seat…empty seats were everywhere. Sadly, movie theatres are another example of great gathering places that are slowly disappearing.
Didn’t Peter Kent get kicked out of school? During the strip where Gordon was outside giving Allyson his coat, he then goes indoors where Michael tells him that he missed a wild show. Peter had drunkenly tried to attack one of the teachers, and Martha commented that Peter will probably be expelled for that.
But, take heart, Gordy, all is not lost. In high school, I knew a girl that was our version of Marilyn Monroe. She dated lots of jocks, but the one she married was thin, not at all a jock and had pimples on his face. As young adults, we couldn’t understand why she married our friend except he was loyal, kind and loved the true woman in her dearly.
But all Allyson has to do is remember the comic strip from Friday September 14, 2018, where Gordon did not do almost all of those things. One good deed with a taxi ride does not erase those “hormone attacks” where Gordon’s friends had to throw him to the ground to keep him from going after Allyson.
Girls like bad boys. in HS they love the sports stars. Meanwhile, its the boy who spent his time in the computer lab, the one none of the pretty girls look at, who become millionaires and billionaires. Meanwhile, they marry the HS sports star or bad boy. Then live out “Glory Days” by Springsteen for real.

The Shangri-Las articulated that seeming dichotomy pretty well in late 1964. See Leader Of The Pack for details…..

Some people are attracted to what’s bad for them. Or they think they can change/heal/cure/tame the other person.

Well, Gordy, the reason is obvious. Allyson goes for Peter for the same reason Gordy goes for Allyson: the cuteness factor.

The heart and the brain are seldom on the same page when it comes to the emotion of love.

Women would often ditch the one who respects her, then team up with the jerk, and endlessly complain about men for all time thereafter.

Gordon says:
I’d never hurt her.
She’d never have to guess with me.
She’d always know where I was and how I felt.
I’d treat her with respect!
I’d care

Allyson is doing what so many young people do - choose good looks over good character. She’ll learn - hopefully not the hard way.
