I suppose all Americans know this song, but I had to make a Google search. Eventually I found a video of Jamie Foxx singing it on Jimmy Fallon, with an impression of Jennifer Hudson.

Everyone has to leave the nest sometime Calvin. In your case you’re getting pushed out, way to early.

That last panel is one of the best ever in all of comic strip history.

Some people have no appreciation for fine music.

Song sparrows are overrated anyway. Just tweeting, no particular music.

We used to sing “On top of old Smokey, all covered in hair….”

…And then the poor meatball rolled right out the door. Now all Calvin needs to do is plant a meatball tree and he will be all set.

I WOULD SING WITH HIM, GREAT BONDING MOMENT.

When I saw this strip for the first time, I didn’t know what the song was, so I ended up singing it to the tune of a different song…

Years later, he’ll complain about how his parents smothered his prodigious singing talent!

Just another example of how great an artist Watterson was.

It was Dick Biondi in Chicago that made that song famous, I believe, but the meatball was on top of his pizza, not spaghetti. He was later booted from the radio station for an off color joke.

I love how Watterson can go from a near-photorealistic drawing of a sparrow in one panel to one with a cartoonishly overexaggerated mouth in the next

Well, that’s one version. I love the artwork of the sparrow singing. That is hilarious. :D

It’s an old one, but I NEVER tire of it. The drawings of the bird just break me up…
