There’s a lesson here: Don’t get ambitious. Just keep your head down and find a way to slog through the rest of your life with a roof over your head and food in your stomach.
Tiff, ever hear of student loan? Or the work-study program on campus? Or get a second job? All restaurant jobs are part-time so you are not a full-waging employee. Same for any retail except management. Either get a second part-time job or look for a full-time job in an office as a receptionist or a file clerk or something like that. You can’t depend on eBay as an income unless you buy a bulk of discounted designer clothes and resell them at a percentage and that requires money of which you apparently don’t have. Don’t get despondent and give up. There are solutions – probably not ones you like but they are there for you to take.
Tiff is up against the wall. Looks like two possible scenarios: (1) Somebody offers to take Tiff in – could be Bets, Gunther, Les, Al & Irma, Frank & Nancy, Pru, Ox… (2) Tiff has to move in with Tom & Ann. Could be a surprise twist if Ann helps Tiff with her econ course.
Wow. That means that Tiffany’s dad Tom, isn’t even footing the dorm room bill during the Fall, Either. Which means Tiffany May be left with the following “options:”
1) Drop out of College and move back home = Ann Eiffel WINS.
2) Stay in College and move back home = Ann Eiffel WINS
3) Stay in College but take up Les’ previous “offer” and move into the Gulag = Les (GAG/VOMIT) WINS.
4) Stay in College but move in with Bets, halving the room costs for BOTH. Plus having Bets nearby to help with studies, and friendship. = Tiffany WINS.
I’m hoping #4, but I doubt it’ll be that easy. I’m STILL getting the feeling that Ann or Les will rear their hideous heads before this Arc is over……., :(
Tiffany, you and bets will figure it out. Don’t quit, you don’t want to give ann aweful the satisfaction. If you quit, Ann will swoop in like a hungry vulture and shred what lil self esteem you do have cause she’ll assume you’ll come crawling to her for help. Don’t. give. her. that. ego. boost
Get a better job – I can’t imagine that waitressing part time at the Fuse pays much of anything.
And maybe this is where Tiffany learns that she actually has to TRY and not just coast along thinking success will be handed to her because she’s pretty.
This is a very important arc in Luannverse. Both Luann is in a period of uncertainty in the one common characteristic of her life, romance, and insecurity, and Tiffany is in a period of uncertainty with the one characteristic of an unrealistic understanding of life, and insecurity. In Luann’s case the insecurity is self-inflicted, in TIffany’s I lay the blame firmly at the father. Being an optimistic person I am hoping that she does not give up, and uses her friends and determination, to get to a more realistic understanding of life, and being confident she can cope with life with reasonable success.
I see a crisis approaching. The 1st two panels sound like an argument between Ann Eiffel and Sheraton St. Louis. Tiff needs to crank up some solid dispassionate, adult thinking here to counter the Eiffel-witch messages and comfort the beleaguered Sheraton. The lecturer’s response in yesterday’s strip probably precipitated this.
A mentor/confidant could help greatly. Luann and Gunther have both exhibited empathy and some skills in that regard. The lecturer from yesterday may turn into an actual teacher and reach out to Tiff with some real advice. One could suppose Bets hasn’t been added to the mix for no reason.
But where will GNK go from here? This could actually go in several directions.
This is sad. Tiffany looks totally ruined. But at the same time, it’s impressive to think how much her character has developed since the almost one dimensional bully she was in high school. I believe she can still succeed. She need to speak with her friends, ask for help and find a less expensive room. I don’t know what she will do, but I root for her.
The post-high school years have not been very kind to the characters of Pitts. There is no longer anything that binds them together. I feel most sorry for Tiff.
Tiff needs to seek out help so she can improve her grades/comprehension of subject matter. She should also talk to her father, explain how hard she is trying and seek his help: maybe he has a job connection. Then she should restart her nails business and if Bernice interferes introduce her to Sheraton St Louis’s cousin, Louisville Slugger.
She feels ashamed that she’s not doing well in class. Now what she needs to do is talk with her friend Betts who got an “A” and get a little tutoring. She failed ONE test / quiz – wake up call.
The big difficulty today is that Tiffany is mixing all her emotions into one big bowl of stew. She is upset about the test….. and it stirs up all her other challenging emotions. This is logical…. but may also be counterproductive for her. In this case, even though I tend to be a “big picture” sort of person….. I think it is better for her to look at each problem or difficulty more individually…… looking at the “big picture” of her difficulties could be too easily overwhelming.
She needs to, IMO:
a) Initially look only at the test score… and figure out ways that she can make changes now so that when the next exam of the semester happens…. she will be able to score significantly better. That in itself will likely take a lot of her energy.
b) If/When she gets the exam issue under better control, then she should move on to the other issue of money. I say this, because, unless Mooney is different from U’s in my region…. by this point of the new school year…. the only way should could be in the dorm at this point is to have had the dorm fully paid for for the semester (if not the whole year). No schools in my region have dorms where you pay month-by-month. So…. she should technically by this time be at least on safe footing in the dorms through the end of the semester.
c) When she gets her class (presumably classes, but she may be doing “ok” in others) under control, she can then analyze how to live more frugally (as many suggested…. share a dorm with Bets and/or more folks for a cheaper price, move to a seedy, less expensive off campus apartment/room, etc).
Been down in Tierra Del Fuego, and now that I’m back for a little while, I see Tiffany’s at another low again. If she was real, I’d think she was put on this world as a test to see how much a human being can stand before they totally break. It’s been obvious that her creator, Greg, must have created her as his own little outlet to dump all he can on her as she must represent someone who did him wrong in his earlier life. It wouldn’t surprise me if he has a doll made in the image of Tiffany, and he breaks the nails off the doll one by one. Night after night.
If Tiffany wants to truly make a go at this, she needs to seek help from Bets, Gunther, and her instructor, I’m sure all of them would be willing to help her succeed. Unfortunately, that’s all in Greg’s hands, where he’s preoccupied with her slow destruction.
I see a number here that feel sorry for Tiffany. I’ve been beating that drum for some time. If she’s withstood everything Greg has thrown at her so far, I’m sure she will be able to make it somehow. The quitter mentality that’s embodied by the image to the left is pure Greg himself. Tiffany needs to squelch that one and move on. Better yet, move on to another strip. Go over to Mark Trail and give Cherry a run for her money. That seven year thing might be kicking in by now.
So, Economics is about learning to control your selling as well as your spending. I’m guessing later lessons will teach about inventory.
Tiffany needs help, and she knows it. The question is, what will she do now? Her dad (under Ann’s advisement) made her go see Mrs. Fogarty, but I don’t think she’ll be much help. And I can’t imagine how much money was spent on her.
Her best options are as follows… ONE: TALK TO BETS!!! She can help her study and understand the art of buying and selling. TWO: THRIFT SHOPS!!! I’m sure there are clothes there that are good enough to wear at cheap prices. Perhaps she’ll run into her old friend, Crystal.
Tiff should move into Brad’s old room in Luann’s house for minimal rent, quit college, and go to beauty school. That’s where her talents lie. Not in learning a bunch of crap she’ll never use anyway. Tiff has never been an academic. Why not let her excel in something she’s already good at?
