Gee. Les, Ox, Old Smiley. ALL of these guys once had Ann in check once upon a time. ALL were at the Fuse at a crucial time and yet NONE of them came out when NEEDED.
No doubt Les will play up the “noble knight” bit by not taking any more of Tiff’s tips.
I still say, that if Les REALLY wanted to help, he’d go over to Mr. Farrell and introduce himself as Tom’s future step-son.
PS: Please Tell that Les made a copy of that customer list………,
I think Les genuinely does care, and not necessarily romantically. He’s trying really hard to break free of being the son his mother shaped him to be. I can’t wait to see his uncle’s backstory and how he escaped the family criminal pattern.
Les is demonstrating generosity…tossing Tiffany a DIME. I think I would have preferred to see him demonstrate some ire and vengeance and a suitable plan to rid us all of Ann Eiffel.
Looks like Les has freed Tiff from her obligation of forking over 1/2 of her tip earnings – will wonders ever cease? Don’t know if he has turned the corner to becoming a good guy or is this an example of “temporary insanity” by him…
Lessee here – 10 cents. That is a pretty good down payment on a prospective girlfriend. Do not think that it could not happen. Tiff was baring her shoulder and waiting for him to reciprocate when he picked up the “guest list” of Evil Annie’s fake lingerie party. His mind was in a different mode then, otherwise…
Remember Les is a product of Evil Ann. Maybe once you get to know him he isn’t all that bad. Either way him and Tiff deserve to have some joy in their lives. I mean at how Tiff was in the earlier strips, people can change.
Les will mention this to his uncle, who strikes me of having connections or associations with “goodfellas”. Ergo, the man might come up with a plan on dealing with Ann.
Then again I wonder how Bernice is doing in her “X” year of college.
There’s somebody else maturing that everyone is forgetting. In spite of all her financial problems, Tiffany is still trying to honor the deal she made with Les.
The return to The Trials and Tribulations of Tiffany saga over the past two and a half weeks has been very confusing. Greg’s penchant is for his characters to return to norm when he has lulled us away from it. Yet Les has been acting against his “norm” this whole episode. Are we to believe Punk therapy is softening Les up? “The Plan,” according to Bets, is for Tiff to cut her housing costs and not to think charity is the solution. Yet today Les offers up his half of Tiff’s tips. Something he seemed loathe to do in he strip of the nineteenth.
Tiffany, Bets and Gunther have been portrayed in their usual behaviors. But Les’ character is hard to read. He’s made some typical Les comments over the past two weeks but only to be played off as not taken seriously by Bets and Gunther. He has also made some overtures about caring for Tiff’s plight.
It appears that GnK may be setting us up for a Les and Tiff hookup but how will that solve Tiff’s problems with funding and Awful Annie? If Les were to return to his pre-Gulag norm the Tiff infatuation would be anything platonic. See for example: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2017/06/06.
Nothing to do but watch the train wreck play out, I guess.
HI guilty of scanning other comments first. This panel is not about a romance between Les and Tiffany, if that happens it will, but that is not the point, so breathless entreaties that he not be her future boo is immaterial. What is shown, IMHO is my thesis that Luannverse is going to help her become an independent young woman, supporting herself, going to college, working her butt off, growing to be a full and not shallow, pretentious person. As for Les he is showing character, and I have said Luannverse is slowly getting him to be a better person as well. Not perfect, but then who is, in the real world, or Luannverse?
Les was handed a perfect set up to break off his deal with Tiffany and still maintain his usual rep and attitude to some degree. Doesn’t hide that he’s slowly evolving into a better person possibly though. But it did lessen the shock of him ending the understanding Tiffany and him have. Despite the sleaziness of the deals Tiffany has going with both Les and Gunther, Tiffany deserves a lot of credit for not trying to get out of them before now and before selling all her stuff.
the ememy of my ememy is my friend. but this also shows Les, does have some compasion for other people. I think he is also starting to understand that others saw him how they see his mother. and He doesn’t want to be anything like her.
During a lean period of my life, i eked by as a pizza delivery driver. The pizzaria was next to a college campus and the dorm residents were notoriously tight with tips. On evening, i delivered a $9.90 pizza to a young woman in the dorm. She gave me a ten and waited for her change, then turned to go back inside.
i said, “May i ask you a question? Have you ever worked as a waitress?”
She said yes.
i then asked, “How did you earn your living?” as i turned to go.
She threw the dime back at me. i threw it back, saying. “Someday, deary, you’ll need this dime more than i ever will.”
Les returns his “cut”. In this instance it is insignificant (because Ann’s “tip” was insignificant), but it does suggest that Les is still likely planning to carry out his earlier suggestion of not taking a share of Tiffany’s tips any longer. As Luann1212 suggested, today reads also to me as just another set of panels in what appears to be a long, slow story arc of the growing up and “becoming more whole” adults of Tiffany and Les.
But, please, Greg….. please do not have Tiffany move into the Gulag! No need for more Unger/Madison shenanigans…. nor need for a “Three’s Company” style trope either.
If/when Tiffany changes her living situation… for me, I think it would be most interesting to have it be a) moving in with Bets, b) moving in with Bernie and Dez, or c) having her move back home (for just a little while) with Evil Ann and Tom “Cat”.
It is good of Leslie that he wants to Save The Butt. This could lead to a movement.
………………………..
My younger son received many hand-me-downs and we would often comment, “That’s a pretty little shirt. That used to be your shirt,” or whatever he was wearing.
One day, after a bath, Number 2 Son was standing there naked when Number 1 son remarked, “That’s a pretty little butt. That used to be my butt.”
I was thinking maybe Ann Eiffel is lying to Tiffany about her and Toms life just to make Tiffany miserable. She does enjoy the agony of others and if Tiffany were to call her father, Eiffel would be there to intercept her call. I am impressed where the character of Tiffany is going. From self centered girl to a woman who keeps her promises.
I might be going out on a limb here, but maybe Les’ heart is softening a little. I hope so. I also hope he’s now planning to get even with his mother in some nefarious way. Can I have it both ways? Also, Les may also be trying to “one-up” Gunther when Gun tells Tiff he doesn’t want his 50% of the lingerie sales. Les got there first, after all.
Maybe a better solution would be for Tiff to start figuring out how to cut costs, generate some more income and oh, yeah— distance herself from the Ann- Tom situation. If her father is willing to believe some bimbo he’s banging over his daughter, then she is better off without his “help”. Obviously, Tom doesn’t take Tiff seriously and isn’t really that interested in her. Tiff should get some therapy and move on. Until Ann ruins Tom financially or gets caught cheating on him, Tom’s never going to believe Tiff’s version of events. As for Les— for a guy raised by a grifter who appears to a sadistic sociopath, he’s made tremendous progress.
Tiffany handled the situation well. And, being true to her word, she gave half the “tip” to Les.
Les, after hearing how Tiff had to work her butt off for his no-good mother, only to be given a 20-cent tip, decided that no one should have to work their butt off for Ann Eiffel. Plus, unlike his mother, he actually has a heart. He knows how evil Ann can really be. And it’s not like he really needs the extra money. He is no longer indebted to Ann, and I still remember how Luann’s mom made him smile after saying what a good worker he’s being.
His life has changed for the better after cutting ties with Ann Eiffel. Now, he’s making it easier for Tiffany to do the same. It does mean cutting ties with her father, though, but if he’s not going to listen to his own daughter, then he deserves what Anne will eventually give him.
Most restaurants would have large commercial dishwasher machines. Does Les just do the prewashing? Anyone here know about how restaurant do their dishwashing?
Les has a sly look in panel 3. I have a hunch he’s going to pitch a scam to Tiff. This will really test whether Tiff will resist going over to Awful Annie’s dark side of the farce. On the other hand, maybe he has “A Plan” for Mommy Dearest!?!?
I have a girlfriend. She is what you might call gifted in the back porch department. She’s also extremely hard-working. She often tells me “I worked my butt off!” I tell her, “No! keep it!” because it’s a thing of beauty. Maybe that’s what Les is going for.
