Hummmmm thought score would of been kept on the smartphones not on the old school white board. Stephan when you get rid of the Debbie Downer pills you will feel better……… Croc Power !
This may be a bit optimistic, but I happen to think there is a lot more good out there than is being reported. The good is just plain human decency; the bad, which strays from the norm, gets all the press.
Here in Colorado Springs CO. there are ads on broadcast TV (at least 10 a day) warning us not to give ‘those people’ any money or personal help and that only they know what the homeless need. Only the money changers can help the poor and homeless.

If all one does is read/listen/watch the news one would think the world is in terrible shape. Yet I was at a day long event dedicated to local politics – it was informative, the discussions were polite, the disagreements were respectful. Is see churches and temples feeding the homeless. I see kids visiting the elderly, I see the elderly reading to small children. Don’t let the darkness of a few blind you to the fact that there are Rainbows and Unicorns out there.
“Goodness” doesn’t have to be financial assistance or a grand gesture. You shouldn’t have to be a public display of your “goodness”. Help someone reach the unattainable…from a high shelf. Open a door..and look behind you to make sure the door doesn’t smack someone in the face. Big pile of groceries and someone behind you with two items…let them go ahead and watch the look on their face…could be gratitude, could be entitlement. “Goodness” should be personal, not a tally. When you look in the mirror when you wake in the morning, do you see the “goodness” or just a self absorbed egotist?
I’ve helped people a couple of times. I won’t give money, but I’ll offer to buy food. In Seattle someone accosted me as I left the bus tunnel, so I offered him a Starbucks card. (They serve food too). He didn’t want that, so I offered to buy him something from Subway, on the way to where I was going. He didn’t want that either. I guess he wasn’t hungry after all.
Then recently on my Washington DC trip, someone spotted me from across the street and picked me out among others that evening. I must have seemed like an easy mark. He pointed out a food court I didn’t know existed, but most of the places seemed closed. There was one place still open, but he didn’t like that place. After I offered food, he next promoted himself to me going to CVS and buying him things, but luckily all the stores were closed. He was still following me by the I got to The Wharf. He pointed out a restaurant with a long line, but I didn’t want to spend that much time with him. Finally we found a pizza window that he found acceptable. While he was waiting for the order to come through, I made a swift walk for it to continue to All About Burger by the Waterfront Station. I might have told him enough about my plans for him to catch up with me, but he never did.
One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.
Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.
The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”
It’s harder to ’toon about, but what homeless folks need more than a couple of bills is, well, a home!
And studies have shown that getting them housed is possibly the most cost effective way to deal with many of the problems that led to them becoming homeless.
Pig’s heart is in the right place, and what he did was nice, but it’s unknowingly self-centered. He makes this Badness/Goodness ledger that’s apparently just from his own experience and perspective, then presumes to be the one to even the score. Again, his heart’s in the right place, but he really should step outside of his rather narrow perspective.
Pig has the right idea. Instead of just complaining how horrible the world is, do something good to make up for it. No matter how small it is, it still counts.
