So sweet of Georgia to do that! I too leave food and water out for a stray I call Sir Guy. I’ve seen him pal around with a couple cats and heard a scuffle or two over the summer. He seems to have passed the word on to the stray feline community. We also get the occasional skunk, opossum (or two) and once even a raccoon.

Wonder who else Georgia inadvertently feeds?

We put 2 bowls of cat biscuits out every night. At the side of the bungalow and in the back garden, both under lights. In the morning the bowls are empty,we have some very chubby hedgehogs!

My grandma used to leave cat food out on the porch. But I did once see a raccoon availing himself of it, too.

We’ve got two ferals we feed — Ginger Tom and (we think) his son, Tux. The names should probably give a clue to their appearance. : ) Our neighbors took care of the TNR and we all keep an eye on the boys.

We have a lady across the street who feeds all the ferals. On the other hand, I bought some fancy treats for Yum Yum that she loathes, so I may scatter them along the fence for the squirrels and chipmunks.

I think the Man knows something.

    Off Topic:

Thank you all for the extremely kind words, thoughts and prayers. I did get some sleep last night, though it was a troubled sleep. Yesterday I applied for Unemployment, it was the first time ever in my life. I also contacted several people in and around my old career and they agreed to be references for me going forward.

My problem is [and there are many according to Marie :-) ] I feel entirely directionless. I honestly thought I could have stayed in that job until an my eventual retirement. I have had a job since I was 14 years old when I started cutting grass for a number of old neighbors. Now, for the first time in 42 years, I am unemployed and I feel like a failure…not logical but emotions are tricky buggers.

I thank all of you here on the orb. Since I cannot afford a psychologist, this forum might become my virtual couch and you all my Doctors.

Oops, I forgot to mention a momentous occasion yesterday. It was Onyx’s Gotcha Day!

A year ago on Halloween, sis’s next door neighbor showed her a pic of a senior black cat in need of a new home after her human (the neighbor’s aunt) had died. Sis, whose previous owner (Zoe, my avi) had died a few months earlier at the dignified age of 17 & who’d been thinking about adopting another cat but was still hesitating, took one look & said “Sure, I’ll be happy to take her in.”

Onyx arrived the next day, a sad little cat covered in flea dirt, sick with diabetes, suffering from arthritis in her hindquarters, & missing all but her 4 tiny bottom front teeth…

After a trip to the vet (sis says, “My ‘free to good home’ cat cost me $500 the first week”), flea treatment & a good bath, a change of diet, & some meds for her arthritis, Onyx started to come out of her shell & has become the happiest, sweetest girl you can imagine. She loves sitting in laps & curling up next to your feet in bed. Her temperament is so mellow that sis calls her “Zen Cat” – she didn’t even mind being petted by 3 of sis’s grandkids (ages 7, 4, & 3) at once – but she also occasionally surprises us with bursts of playful energy.

    And that MOTOR! https://www.instagram.com/p/BzzLFQFnr7d/

Helping grandma with her knitting: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0wFlgJnfuA/

Indulging her foot fetish (that MOTOR again!): https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzn-UjOnv7z/

Zonked out, not a care in the world: https://www.instagram.com/p/BzQ08hDJiid/

So…a belated Happy Gotcha Day, Onyx!

    “That big ginger stray..” :-)

“For if I ever saw you, I didn’t catch your name

But it never really mattered; I will always feel the same

Love you forever and forever, Love you with all my heart

Love you whenever we’re together, Love you when we’re apart”

When I put out food for cats I bring it in shortly after dark. Cats are diurnal, active at dawn and dusk. Most other wildlife in my area are nocturnal, out all night. Feeding one wild animal is like trying to feed one seagull; the word gets around fast.

OT: Thank you all for your support of Scaeva, and through him, support to me.

I usually lurk without commenting, mainly because I read comments up to “yesterday”, so I don’t miss any. Which means that any comment I make, only the person to whom I reply will see it.

I’m a bit sore, moving cautiously, and sleeping a catly amount – 10 hours at night, and an hour or two nap in the afternoon, with a pillow over my abdomen so when the cats walk on me it doesn’t hurt. They’re really trying to help!

FWIW, we are warned in our “suburbural” area that leaving food outside attracts coyotes, either directly or indirectly by the smaller critters that are attracted. The coyotes in our area seem to come out earlier at night every year as they become more acclimated to people. Ten years ago they used to pass through the neighborhood around 3 or 4 am, but now we hear them as early as 9 or 10 pm. We’re afraid we recently lost our own indoor / outdoor “Tommy” cat, who came in every night, to coyotes one evening.

Wait, has the Man been holding out on us? Does he speak Catese like the Toddler? Is that why Elvis was willing to accept him? (Accept, not neccesarily love)

I’m at a place where there are a family of raccoons living in the nearby storm drain inlet, and there are occasional possums, and once, a skunk! I stopped cleaning out the bunny food dish out front (Shadow would at times mess in the dish), as I figured it attracted the critters. Still, a good neighborhood!! :)

I wonder why so many ginger cats are huge? Somehow the red gene seems to go with large size. I’ve only seen a few small ones, and they were all born feral and were presumably malnourished early in life.
