Were I Charlie Brown, I’d drop those friends like a bad habit. They planned a “testimonial dinner” in his honor then dropped out at the last minute because they felt that holding one was hypocritical. What they did in the end was the epitome of cruelty.

Think of it this way: this dinner with all the hypocritical praise would be great practice for getting into politics.

I’m surprised that Linus would be the one to cancel the dinner. I expected him to be the only holdout. Instead, the lone holdout is Woodstock!

To paraphrase a classic line: Of all the Charlie Brown moments in the world, this is the Charlie Browniest… :-(

How remarkable!! This is the one and only time that we see Patty and Peppermint Patty standing in each other’s vicinity in the whole history of the strip. It’s just a shame that Schulz doesn’t show them interacting with each other in any way, which leads me to wonder whether the two girls even know each other. What do readers think?

There was nothing hypocritical about it. They were (or could have been) honoring his effort, his dedication to the team and the sport and his tenacity, his love for baseball.

It’s easy to honor a winner, even one that wins a world series once every 50 years. It’s much harder (and character building) for someone with Charlie Brown’s record to keep playing the game, keep organizing a team and not just quit and go home.

Said it yesterday and say it again today…“With ‘friends’ like this, who needs enemies?”

Some friends you turned out to be! Leaving poor Chuck all alone! Can’t you just do something nice for Charlie Brown, just because?

Maybe you’re not hypocrital, but all of you are really selfish, you only think about how bad this will feel for you, but you don’t think about Charie Brown’s feelings.

They could’ve just said the truth, what motivated them to have the dinner in the first place. They wanted to do something nice. You don’t have to be insincere to be kind.

You know? I love this comic but as stated if I were Charlie Brown I’d tell them all to take a hike!!

You know how you’d see headlines about Sparky like “The Suprising Dark Side of America’s Favorite Cartoonist”? I think of story lines like this and then I read those headlines and I just can’t stop laughing. Did any of these people actually READ Peanuts?!?

Any excuse for a party, unless being stuck with the bill because he is the only one left there.

The friends have failed to appreciate the leader who might not be very skilful but there was no dearth of sincerity on his part to lead the team.

Yeah, I agree with both of you. 1. It’s only a comic, but 2. It’s not funny.

I never thought less of Charlie Brown’s friends than I did when I saw this. They set up a situation to honor him, then go out of their way to humiliate him. I’m glad Woodstock stuck with him, at least.

I’ve noticed that CSchulz had somewhat of a mean streak to his humor. Bashing CB all the time, the verbal abuse to CB in all the tv specials, and the dark personality of Lucy. The real scary part is the readers who laugh and find humor in the abuse of another – even a cartoon character.

Did Charles M. Schultz think this was funny?

Man, I grew up with Peanuts. How did I not understand the cruelty? Sort of like going back and re-reading Calvin and Hobbes…Calvin is a jumbo jerk. Reading the Charles Shultz Bio is recommended reading to understand….

No offense to the memory of Sparky, but this is total BS. Everyone is already there and they THEN decide to cancel?! Sheesh. I still love Peanuts though.

Comics are often a reflection of real life or experience of the cartoonist – camouflaged in “humor”.

Charlie Brown is rarely (ever?) placed in happy situations, but this is about the most heartbreaking I’ve ever seen

When you consider that Sparky wrote Charlie Brown as an autobiographical character, what must he have suffered to be able to create this type of strip?

You know what’s hypocritical, Linus? You never sticking up for Charlie Brown when people are bullying him, but it’s okay to stand up for some girl when people are bullying her! Granted, said girl was in a bad state, but you’re supposed to be Chuck’s best buddy!

Face it, Charlie Brown. It’s not you, it’s them. As soon as you graduate high school, at age 18, volunteer for the U.S. Air Force. There, you will find all the brothers and sisters you will ever need. Never look back! Never go back!

Even after Charlie Brown gave everyone he knows a Valentine’s Day card, he only got a pity Valentine card, from Patty, who wrote over a card she had received.

At least Woodstock stayed. And it’s hypocritical of Linus to get everyone to throw the party for Charlie Brown and then leave when everyone else backs out.

Even worse than everyone complaining the dinner would be hypocritical and should be cancelled is they’re doing within earshot of poor ol’ Charlie Brown.

The lack of sincerity would be detrimental to Linus’s Great Pumpkin theological viewpoint. The Great one only appears over the most sincere pumpkin patch.

He puts his heart into the team and he makes it possible for them to play. Everyone already knows they always lose but he is managing and pitching for the love of the game…that deserves a dinner! Let the testimony of the testimonial reflect his commitment
