“So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:15
“Then what was all this for?” That is for you to decide. Just make sure at the end you can truthfully say “This was my life, for which I am well and truly pleased.”
Reminds me of the old Peggy Lee song “Is That All There Is?”. “If that’s all there is, then let’s keep dancing. Let’s break out the booze, and have a ball.”
Well it’s kind of like the case of Adam. Bible tells us that he became a living soul (Genesis 2:7, KJV) when he was created from the particles in earth. When God sentenced him to death there was no mention of any kind of afterlife. Rather Adam was to return where he was before he was created (Genesis 3:19). And where was he before he was created? He was nowhere.
That is also why God told him that he was to eat from the ground in toil/pain/sorrow (depending on which translation we use) “all the days” of his life (Genesis 3:17). For that to be the case his life span was to consist only of the years he was alive as a human.
This is also the reason why passages such as Psalm 146:4 (KJV) say (about putting ones trust in a human) that such persons cannot bring lasting hope, because upon their death “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts do perish.”
And Ecclesiastes 9:5 (KJV) says “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.”
Likewise Ecclesiastes 9:10 (KJV) says “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”
The flipside of this is though that because there is no afterlife there is also no hellfire. Passages like Luke 16:19-31 are sometimes offered as proof of hellfire but “hell” (the term used in KJV) is often described figuratively in the Bible. For example in Revelation 6:8 “hell” is riding or following a horse and Revelation 20:14 describes hell as being thrown into a lake of fire. Revelation 20:14 also states that the “lake of fire” is a symbol of something else.

Unwarranted assumption, Rat. What makes you think that “all this” was for anything?

Comics aren’t really a good venue for discussing the intricacies of philosophy. But it’s okay to take a shot. Some of us DO have a sweet tooth.
