I see that Calvin’s disappointment over the Chocolate Sugar Bombs Propeller Beanie hasn’t put him off their products. The cardboard box that it was delivered in must have made up for it.
I love the ads for children’s cereals. “Part of this complete (or nutritious) breakfast” which also includes eggs, toast and juice. The breakfast would be more nutritious without the cereal. What kids (and their parents) hear is “This stuff is good for you.”
Back in the 50s, cereals actually used sugar content as a selling point. “Sugar Pops – they’re shot with sugar through and through.” “Sugar Crisp” “SUGAR Frosted Flakes” to name a few.
Kellogg developed Frosted Flakes to limit the amount of sugar-he came up with the idea after watching his 10 year old son dump like 4 teaspoons of sugar on his corn flakes.
By the time Calvin was running in newspapers, I think most cereals had already banned the word sugar from their names. It was tantamount to shutting the fox inside the henhouse, as it had little or nothing to do with reducing the sugar content in the cereal itself. But it scared fewer parents, conditioned to now viewing sugar as the great Satan of diets.
Cartoonists who write about kids (and i’m in the same boat) are often reflecting their own childhood rather than that of contemporary readers.
Makes you wonder why Mom buys it for Calvin in the first place. I suppose with Calvin, it’s easier to give in rather than hearing “Gimme, gimme, gimme! Buy me, buy me, buy me! Get, get, get!” every food shopping trip.

Let’s hope it meets the daily recommendation for sugar.

I’m not much into chocolate cereal (Cocoa Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs, Coca Krispies, I think not even Cookie Crisp).

Hummingbirds have a ridiculously high metabolism that requires a LOT of nectar and a LOT of sugar.
So if you think about it, a hummingbird is a perfect mascot for a sugary cereal.

100% of the daily allowance of caffene in those things? That will make Calvin more hyper than a ferret on Redbull! ;D

And in just how much of your daily intake is this again? Most cereals list per 28-30 grams. Lol

I don’t even know how they get away with calling the boxes of sugar, cereal. Grape Nuts is about the only one I’ve found that is edible.

An advertising slogan for this crap. “Sure, it has so much sugar your kid will be hyper, but, at least, he’ll eat it.”
