For those of you who do not understand today’s comic, I will explain the setup, and the joke.

Today’s comic takes place in a room with a yellowish green wall, and a light red floor.

I assume you have surface understanding of the Garfield universe, because I will not be explaining it.

The first panel shows Garfield standing in the room, irritated. With the speech bubble “Garfield…”. The second panel shows Jon next to Garfield with his bell bottom pants. Garfield now has his eyes wide open. And Jon says “Do you think bell bottoms will make a comeback?”. The third panel shows Garfield saying “Not if you have anything to do with it.”, and Jon is now disappointed.

That’s just the setup for the comic, not the joke. I will now explain the joke in today’s comic. The joke is bell bottom pants is an irregular choice for a pair of pants, especially in today’s age. And the combination of Jon and his bell bottom pants causes Garfield to doubt Jon’s ability to resurface the popularity of bell bottom pants. Now that is just one hilarious joke, with such deep meaning, but such good payoff. Garfield is always hilarious to me, and never fails to make me laugh. Thank you Jim Davis for this hilarious addition to the Garfield comic series.

These must have been Jon’s bell bottoms from Middle School. But I always liked bell-bottoms and although not in fashion at the moment, they made a comeback for awhile maybe 10 years ago or so. Whatever happens with bell bottoms, just hope that the polyester Leisure Suit never makes a comeback!

I never saw bell bottoms that looked like that. For one thing, when bell bottoms were in style, the length was almost to the ground, and never above the shoe. Also, they were always made of lightweight material that swished around your ankles. Can you tell that I am was a teen in the 60’s?
