Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Reminds me of âThe Thomas Crown Affairâ with Pierce Brosnan. When it was said that the stolen painting would return to its proper place, I immediately understood the twist. Now, I know that the movie was a remake, and I donât remember having seen the original. Still, maybe I had seen it some time, and subconsciously remembered.
SMOKEY: Thanks for getting my hat back from the Hat Bandit, Tracy. DT: Yeah. Sorry the brim got bent. So, are your guys ready for the annual Policemen versus the Firemen Softball and Hot Dog Eating contest?
SMOKEY: We will be in a minute. Most of the team is putting out the grill fire right now. Do we have to play in our fire gear again this year? Itâs so heavy and hot. I think itâs the main cause of our annual defeat.
DT: Well, you wanna be ready in case thereâs a fire, donât ya? Besides, my team has to wear their badges and theyâre kind of heavy. Also, you guys always win the Hot Dog Eating Contest. Fairs fair!
Well hopefully tomorrow we can say âScram, Gravy ainât Wavyâ Gould rolls over once again. Hereâs a thought boys; if you donât want to continue a real Dick Tracy strip, why not find someone else to do it, hopefully someone who can draw.
I have often said on this board that crossovers diminish both Tracy and the crossover character. This instance proves my point. Smokey had to be toned down and made more realistic and Tracy had to be cartoonized. Both characters shadows of themselves. It is like turning on your favorite TV show and finding all of the roles are now played by other actors who are all playing the roles with different interpretations than we have ever had before. Who had the idea that the strip would be better if it changed everything and dispensed with all of the things that made the strip famous in the first place?
Minit Mysteries and crossover rarely work and one on top of the other is a double disaster.
What has happened to the drawing/look of the strip? It just looks so artificial and Tracy just is not drawn as well as he was about 3 weeks ago. The look of the strip has changed and I donât know why.
Ye gads! A crossover within a Minit Mystery! I remember Smokey Stover, but it was one of my least favorite Sunday color comicsâtoo screwball for my taste, even as a callow youth. And, besides, this Smokey does not look much like that Smokey. But no doubt a little firefighter heavy-handedness will bring Aurora Rising to light again, unfortunatelyâŚ.

Good morningâ˘, goofy crossover characters !
Does this mean the statue is in the park or just a meeting place ?

Good morningâ˘, oldtimers!
Even the guest writers and artists are getting into crossovers! Smokey Stover was very popular in its day. It ran from 1935 until 1972:

This beats all.
If ever a character needed to be drawn âin character,â it has to be Smokey Stover, complete with his two-wheeler car.
Maybe having Smokey is the reason they went with this unsettling art.
But having Stover means they didnât go weird enough!

Great to see a classic comic character featured. I recently bought a Smokey Stover comic book.
