Well, alright, I was familiar with hockey players my grandfather had seen play in the 1920s, but sheesh, GilPa, the Microwave retired a dozen years before this kid was born.
In all reality , I’m really sorry but I’ve already given the announcers job to Ms Garza , diversity in the workplace and between you and me she doesn’t know jack about basketball . How about being Towel Boy , it has some interesting perks if you know what I mean .
Actually isn’t the basket MORE than 15 feet away from the free throw line? Isn’t 15 feet just the distance between the line and the floor UNDER the basket? And the basket is 10 feet above the floor. So, using the Pythagorean theorem, wouldn’t the hypotenuse of the triangle be about 18 feet? There also the issue of whether the “basket” means the rim or the bottom of the net but I’ve already been enough of a geek this morning. In any event, to VD’s credit he answered the question Gil meant to pose.
Gil’s next question is to name the third Pharaoh of Egypt’s nineteenth dynasty and then give the value of pi to the twenty-seventh decimal. Kid answers both questions and Gil has to be honest, “You’re smart, but you have a speech impediment. We need someone on the PA who speaks clearly.” Gil gets hit with lawsuit under Americans with Disabilities Act. While he eventually wins, since law says that a handicap which makes you unable to perform the required functions of the job precludes you from being hired, Gil will be even more deeply embittered and retreat entirely to his office, swilling coffee and eating popcorn brought in by Miss Garza. Meanwhile, his coaching assistants will lead teams to valley and state titles.
Per wiki: “On June 19, 1990, Johnson made a 14-foot shot with 0.7 seconds left on the clock, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 92–90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, and giving Detroit a repeat championship. The basket earned Johnson a new nickname: 007.”
Yes, Charks, I agree with your Euclidean geometry. However, isn’t it the backboard that is 15’ from the foul line with the center of the basket 15" closer? And Gil, Is little Kylie still on the driving range @ MCC??
Fast forward to a hotly contested barnburner at home vs. Jefferson for 2nd place in The Valley. 8 seconds left, Milford down 62-61 and GilPa calls timeout. Mudlarks ball. Gil instructs Butt Muench and Sam Finn to set the picket fence. Leonard Fleming is to pass the ball to Dougie Guthrie curling around the double pick. Vic listens intently as Thorp gives his charges final instructions. The officials whistle blows to have the teams resume play. Vic can’t contain himself and yells, “Boys, don’t get caught watching the paint dry!”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen popcorn giving off steam before. Especially an appetizing beige colored steam, if you look at the colorized version. And speaking of steam, you’ll be steamed if you miss reading today’s Mopped Up Thorp.

“Guthrie to shoot the 1 and 1. From 15 feet.” Yes, I can see how this knowledge would be key for a P.A. announcer.

What were GilPa and Miss Garza doing alone in the faculty lounge?

When I was in school, the only smell coming from the teacher’s lounge was cigarettes!

Gratuitous hand drawing in P3.Sure that is not Mr. Garza? Popcorn drawing needs work. May look better in color.

P1, Gil has no idea what the answer is himself.
P2, How the hell would I know? My parents hadn’t even met yet when he was playing!
P3, Yum, Miss Garza has a steaming bowl of Grape Nuts.

very funny looking “popcorn” in panel #3. Looks more like a bowl of Pinto beans
