I think the cat and the closed/open sign are fun things. The cat has two eyes but still puts me in mind of Elvis singing Shake Rattle and Roll. “I’m like a one-eyed cat, peepin’ in a seafood store.”
Riddle… She wears a crown but is not a queen, she has scales but is not a fish; Who is she?
Or if not a Queenfish, maybe this is George “Kingfish” Stevens?
Yes, I agree with the idea that this tableau is a reference to one of the Sterling Secret Origin stories in which he was pulled out of a lobster trap looking more piscine than human, more like the feral humanoid amphibian Gill-Man.
I’m so glad I read this on my phone. I had to zoom in and scroll across panel by panel, and I had no idea what they were staring at until the very end! What a great payoff.
Is he the King Fish or does he see the King Fish? In any event, he hasn’t a care in the world, God love him. This will be a tale to be told throughout the ages. However, Wallace is very lucky that his mother is not there…..
At this point, I think they’re quite content to let the worker keep thinking they’re staring at his toupee (which honestly isn’t that unjustified, as it really isn’t that convincing) while they try and figure out what to do about the Sterling situation…or if they should just leave now and pretend they have nothing to do with him, because, c’mon, there’s gotta be a temptation to do that sometimes.
As a parent there is a specific moment of dread … it is right when you realize that your child is about to do something disastrous, and that you figured it out … just … too … late. :-)
Is that a little doggie resting on a cushion in the furthest right section of the under-counter storage? Sure looks like it to me. Another Sunday saver strip!

Strangely enough, just yesterday I read about an early Rhode Islander (born in Portsmouth) whose name was “Preserved Fish.”

(I also like the little cat’s face pressed against the glass on the left of the last panel.)
