Cretans and Philistines never did get along. (Which is like saying early man and dinosaurs never got along, but will have to save that for another day.)
My kids that age used to do that or my son when little, treated that as rude, yes I told him not too, one place he dared not was his Aunt’s house different state, she demanded manors.
I seem to remember that there are some countries where a solid appreciative burp is expected after a good meal. Actually, even after a mediocre meal, just to be polite. Calvin was very, very polite.

First time I ever got this on GoComics! How many people are here this morning?
Heh, I remember when I was in high school, in many cases if one of the teens burped, he or another would react with “Oh, that was beautiful!” But that DOES sound like something Calvin would say…
When I was in the third or fourth grade, our teacher had to leave the room. While she was gone, one of the boys taught us all to burp at will. Talk about having the ability to do something that no one wants one to do.
The philistines were the people of civilization and culture vice the hill barbarians. Such a shame the hill barbarians won. It was like the fall of Rome.
I don’t know if anyone else has brought this up, but I heard once that in Germany, it is rude to not belch after meal, as that insults your host. Not sure if that is true.
The artwork for Calvin realizing the error of his ways, shrinking under his parents’ extreme disapproval, is so simple and yet so clear…. (there’s a better adjective, but my brain is shutting down for the night, lol.)

For once, I agree with Calvin. Those Philistines were humorless sticklers for table manners.

Actually, I think the Philistines would have appreciated so… profound… a belch.

Calvin practices proper etiquette from Japanese culture and his parents object to his knowledge? Calvin is right. They are philistines.

Calvin’s error was burping so loud it caused all the food to spill off the plates. THAT is why mom and dad are upset.
