If you are going to make up a line, it has more force when you attribute it to someone else.

Caulfield’s (Al Capone) version of Theodore Roosevelt’s “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”?

Despite being a lifelong fan, with several Bogey posters about the house, I had to Google that phrase.

Frazz may need to sweep that hallway more often. That’s a ton of stuff he’s pushing.

I respectfully, humbly and altogether kindly submit that Jef needs to learn about the Oxford Comma, and that “bogarting” is something you do with a joint.

… wherein Caulfield demonstrates that a big vocabulary, and knowing how to use it, is often more powerful than a bigger gun.

This story is true, except the facts have been changed to protect its meaning.

When i was a wee laddie, the cold war and the Soviets the baddie, drummed in me by the hour, was the mantra PEACE THROUGH SUPERIOR FIREPOWER, the imagery my daughters and sons, was of tanks, ships and planes with bigger guns.

The quote is from the movie The Untouchables with Robert DeNiro as Al Capone. It’s a pretty entertaining movie, but definitely fiction.

But, Don Corleone did say that a lawyer with his briefcase can steal more than than 100 men with guns.

I heard of a guy who tried the kind word and a gun tactic. He got all the way to prison.

Obviously Capone didn’t say that! It should be “further” rather than “farther.” Al was a stickler for grammar.

This dialogue sure makes sense coming from Caulfield, who celebrates a touchdown in panel two. Enjoy your fortieth birthday, Caulfield!

Don’t think Al ever gave them a chance to “come back with a bigger gun”.

Capone didn’t say this. It was Professor Irwin Corey.

During the 1920s my great grandfather was a chemist in Illinois. He was often used as court expert to test drinks to see how much alcohol they contained.

One day he gets a phone call, the other person said “This is Al Capone. If you testify in court tomorrow, you wife and daughter will not be home when you get back”. The next morning my great grandfather, my great grandmother, and my grandmother, moved out Illinois.

Years later they were driving back to Illinois to attend the words fair. About 1/2 way there, their car broke down. My great grandmother, decided it was a sign, and they turned around and went home.
