Virtu post funera vivit – Bryson family motto could be the school mottonot to forget “Draco dormiens nunquam titilandus” never tickle a sleeping dragon
Fácil, near cognate in Spanish and means the same. More used to the Spanish use than the English facile, however. Learning from Frazz and the gang once again. Thanks ! !
Yes, the Great Lakes State, even though we can only claim “ownership” to four of the five. Lake Ontario, sadly, is shared by the New Yawkers and the Canucks.
My state’s motto is French, not Latin. “L’etoile du nord,” star of the North, in recognition of the Northwest Angle, MInnesota’s cartographic anomaly jutting into Canada.
Just 48 comments, even though there are 50 States in the US – I would’ve expected that there’s at least one per state to make fun of how his states pompous phrase is the most ridiculous of all.
I never knew there was much of a demand for peninsulas, pleasant or otherwise. If Michigan is a peninsula, is Florida one, too? It sure looks like a penisula, with a population to match.
Sic semper tyrannis for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Attributed to Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the people who assassinated Julius Caesar. John Wilkes Booth purportedly said it after assassinating President Lincoln.

Indiana’s motto is “The Crossroads of America”. Nice of them to admit they’re the “drive through on to someplace better” state.

My favorite Latin motto is from (among others?) John W Campbell, editor of Analog magazine:
Illegitimi non carborundum
Which means “Don’t let the bastards grind you down”. And isn’t actual Latin.

New York’s motto is “Excelsior.” This is usually translated as “Ever upward.”
However, Merriam-Webster defines it as “fine curled shavings of wood forming a resilient mass and used especially for packing fragile items.”
Perhaps instead of the Empire State, we should be the Sawdust State.
