Actually they probably feel as if the weight of the world is off their shoulders. They don’t know what’s next, but they know it’s not “working 18 hour days for subsistence wages”. Anything is an improvement.
IF you will NOTICE, they are both thinking the same things, in the first 3 panels. But Janis is like a lot of mothers, where they never quit being a mother, the dynamics just change as their children age. And Arlo is being a bit uncharacteristic, in not realizing he has to talk to his wife, about their kids & granddaughter.
I think there are two issues. The first is the income situation, which the kids can work out themselves. The second is the effect of economic stress on the couple, and parents can help reassure the kids that hasty decisions about that are a mistake.

The wife is fond of saying “Great minds think alike.” It’s hard to support long distance so it’s another trip to the coast.

Are they going to come live with Arlo and Janis like the kids in Crankshaft?

“we know what we’re thinking, so lets get going.”… what? I thought I’d help him finish what he was saying.

Seems Janis is a mother who never lets go of her children.

My girlfriend is always wearing my t-shirts, dress shirts, jerseys and sweaters.
But let me wear just one of her dresses and suddenly its “we need to talk!”

My deaf girlfriend just told me, “We need to talk.”
That’s not a good sign.

This is Hubby and me. Every once in a while one or the other of us will exclaim “I don’t know why I bother to talk to you!”

Normally those words ‘we need to talk’ are an indication of impending doom.

These are tough times. Everybody needs to be open to giving and receiving help of all kinds.

“We need to talk” is one of the more ominous phrases out there. You never hear “We need to talk – let’s get naughty tonight.”

It seems all men freak out over the words “we need to talk.” I saw it as that, even though they were thinking the exact same things.

Perfect. Just as it is.

Kind of thought this is where this was going. I like to think of it as Janis is always willing to help her kid.

if you are the kind of mother and father you should be, you ever let your children go!
