John’s every movement may be agony, but there is no pain so terrible that would prevent a Patterson parent from raising that lecture finger to the sky to deliver another important lesson that the Patterson kids will never listen to.
I’ve been there – just like that – so let me point out the error of this strip. Dad would not be in any condition to be having a conversation with anyone. He’d be in so much pain, he would just want to be left alone.
For months I wasn’t allowed to drive the family car alone, despite having my license and driving with my Dad. And then fate stepped in, or rather, my Dad hurt his back just like John. The next morning, being Saturday with errands to run, I picked up the keys and said “be back in a couple hours.” The rest is history.
Of course Mike wants to borrow Dad’s car. What teen wouldn’t want to drive the sports car. But he will find it difficult to get Brian, Lawrence and Gordon’s unknown replacement into a 2 seater.
This is John getting what he deserves for screwing Mike over when he wanted to learn to drive! Case in point: https://www.gocomics.com/forbetterorforworse/2021/05/24
Considering the dangers of climate change, he needs to consider transportation that does not hurt the planet. A better way could to get around by sled. “Mush, Farley, mush!”

Maybe you shouldn’t kick a man when he is down, but you can nudge him a little.

What would John say to this. The car is John’s property, and Michael is also John’s property.

My husband bent over to pick up a Lego and his back was out for months. I guess it’s just the woes of aging.
