For my dad, a WWII Navy vet, Navy! For my youngest stepbrother, two cousins, and my uncle, a WWII Army vet, Army! A couple of stepbrothers (Marines) and a couple of cousins (Air Force) kinda get left out, though I suppose the Marines can slide in under Navy.
I was Air Force my son Navy so both of us just want Army to lose. Whatever the outcome the mix of patriotism and an athletic contest just can’t be beat
I love this game. It’s not great football, but the event is fantastic. I didn’t attend the Academy, but I had many friends who did. Go Army, beat Navy.
I don’t do competition. I mean we’ve watched the big ones like the Superbowl but I’m equally happy for either team when they make a good play. Even board games. It’s fun, I don’t care who wins.
At least they don’t do this every week. We don’t want the armed forces to have their brains slowly deteriorate with repeated blows, like it happens in the NFL.
My Father was in the Navy, I was in the Army. My Son the Marines. My Father’s humor was lost on my Son when he told him they referred to Marines as “sea going Bell Hops”.
There is a tradition of stealing Navy’s mascot goat before the game. This year Army stole the wrong goat. Army and Navy have special uniforms for the game. This year’s Army uniform honors the U.S. Special Forces. Go Army, beat Navy.
My wife was in the Army reserves, however we have 3 children who all joined the Navy. I grew up as an Airforce BRAT. So, we have most of the services covered.
True, and the fighting will probably continue. Just be sure to tell your child in youth hockey to keep their helmet ON until after they skate thru the postgame handshake line. Even if the opposing team is not Canadian.
I’m always amazed that people believe that if you dislike sports, if you just see it in this ONE venue, or watch this ONE game, you’ll suddenly be sold. Somehow, opera and ballet fans don’t feel the need to prosthelytize like this. Fish lovers are the same way. “You just haven’t had the right fish.” No, I just hate fish. Bugger off.
I was Air Force, and as the general said: “No son, the Soviets are the adversary. The enemy is the Navy.” But seriously, it’s just a football game, kids.
Well, my families history of service starts in Upper Canada in 1796 when one of the grands arrived simply because he was single. Someone has served in the Army from then till I wandered home in mid 1975. History shows I should cheer for Army. That said I have fallen in love with Pensacola and they support the Naval air service and I love the Blue Angels. So there is a ‘lean’ towards navy. The real up side it I do not watch either American college ball nor CFL. And with the Packers on a bye, I’ll track down Tampa today, maybe.
Both grandfathers were in the Army Air Corps (later Army Air Force) in different theatres. Great uncles were in the Navy or Marines (One was involved in the Battle of Brisbane and later moved there permanently) and a few were in the “regular” Army. One Grandmother was a WASP. She taught me how to fly before I got my driver’s license. And my father graduated West Point but went into the Air Force. Both teams will have new uniforms for the game. I’ll be looking for those but most of my football energy that Saturday will be preparing for watch parties for the Western and Eastern Finals of the CFL on Sunday. The BBQ will be used. And the smoker. I have plans for a burnt finger surprise (make a lattice work out of good, thick bacon. Place homemade sausage in the middle. Roll it together. You might have to use cooking string, Cook, or smoke, over low heat until it’s done) Might have to make two. But no poutine!!!
It doesn’t matter if you watch it or not. If you do great! If not, no problem. The important thing is, no matter what branch of the military you served, you are one of the most important people on earth, because without you, I and a lot of other people may not be alive today.
I realize these are “service academies” that play, but no matter what, they are still part of the military, and they protect this country. Don’t forget that Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines all field football teams. If they “drafted” the soldiers to play for these teams, just think of what powerhouses these academies they could be in sports! (Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong…)
Even thought my dad has passed away, my sister still watches the game. She was Army; Dad was Navy. If Navy wins now, my sister looks up to heaven and says…good game dad. If Army wins, she says ‘ha got you again!’
