You almost can’t win anymore. The PC Puritans on the left and the MAGA/Q crazies on the right are both into “cancelling” anyone who questions them or doesn’t completely toe the party line.
This is what is happening here in Italy regarding the position on the war in Ukraine. But we Italians are a people that has always divided into two factions since the 13th century.
On a more serious note, why are ALL of the comics trying so hard to give me PTSD? Not just you, Pastis. I’m convinced that’s the goal of the entire raging disaster-porn-driven Worldwide Web. Trauma, trauma everywhere and always plenty of trauma to drink on the Internet. However much time you have, the Internet will scare your pants off for all of that time!
Happened to me in a Facebook Music Group when I had the temerity to say that the admin’s favorite LP was my least favorite. I am no longer a member of that group, lol.
There are people who love to be indignant. They are offended or take offense whether it’s meant or not. They want to be disagreeable and make trouble. No amount of atonement or apologies will satisfy them. Bless their heart.
Arguments like this leave me of two minds. Of course I don’t want to see people persecuted and ruined for a little harmless non-conformity, but at the same time it seems like the only ones who ever really complain about these things fall into one of several types. They want to be either deliberately obnoxious and hateful or recklessly careless with the truth, or else they believe that the world owes them a megaphone which they can use to harangue passers by with opinions that are thoroughly uninteresting. Each of those camps is well represented in this very comments section. Hard to shed tears over people like that.
Ostracization and the ending of careers has yet to materialize, so Rat can rest easy knowing nobody famous has ever faced actual consequences for their words, beyond maybe ONE single job opportunity.
The sad thing about the hyper-cancel culture is it throws shade on VERY REAL cases of VERY REAL abuse and injustice, like the child who cried wolf in old fable…
I’m thinking of Don Imus, who, along with his producer, called (on air) the NCAA champion Purdue women’s basketball team “hardcore ho’s,” “nappy-headed ho’s” and “jigaboos.” I’m also thinking of Roseanne, who tweeted this about Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to U.S. President Barack Obama – “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” Here’s the deal: Your employer doesn’t have to put up with such vile garbage. If you don’t want to be “canceled,” then get your own show, podcast, or whatever, and then you can be as big of a racist, sexist, hateful fool as you want to be.
