What a great way to end off gardening week on FBOFW. And did you catch the hidden message? We started off on Monday with the men doing all the gardening work as in the traditional paternal society,
I used to do that weed pulling but have mellowed considerably. As long as it doesn’t cause rashes (poison ivy) or have stickers (sand spurs, asparagus fern), I don’t bother it.
I gave up on the front garden this year. Too hot and I’m getting too old for the hill it is on. But it is so dry, even the weeds are dying!! I can only give them so much water a week.
My Mom used to pull and cut and kill Hollyhocks when I was a kid. I was amazed when I learned that some people actually grow hollyhocks for their beauty. I always thought they were a weed.
Years ago, the city ordinance banned tall grass and weeds. However, they failed to define weed. Therefore, since there was no definition in the ordinance nor in Black’s law dictionary, it fell to Webster where it was simply an unwanted plant. They also neglected to define “tall.” I threw out a bunch of cases before they changed the ordinance. You can’t be convicted if you can’t tell when you’re in violation.
Here’s a helpful primer to tell the difference between a ‘weed’ and a ‘plant.’ When you pull a ‘weed’ out from your garden it will return. When you pull out a ‘plant’ from your garden it will not return.

Why do I get the feeling that Elly must get really confused by wildflowers or dandelions?

A weed is just a plant with the misfortune of sprouting in the wrong place…

In today’s highly manicured landscapes, wildflowers and “weeds” are the only plants supporting wildlife.

That’s not April at the end of comic, that’s Elizabeth.

You don’t plant weeds and weeds don’t die.

Weeds thrive while the lawn/garden dies of thirst. That’s one difference.

A weed is any plant growing where you don’t want it.

A weed is a perfectly good and useful plant that simply has the misfortune to be growing where some human doesn’t want it.

To tell the difference between a plant and a weed, pull them up. Whatever grows back is a weed.

Do weeds grow faster? It may seem that way.

if it pulls out easily, it’s supposed to be there. If it fights tooth and toenail, it’s a weed.

Those kids have no idea how close they came to be called Milkweed, Elaeagnus, and Arrowhead.

Vinegar works at killing most weeds, but some are invincible! I’m going to try brush killer on those buggers

Weeds grow fast because they are native to the area. Her flowers may be native to someplace else.

Ain’t that the truth. Through the drought, my yard’s gone into hibernation, and the weeds are the only thing growing.
