In the movie The Quiet Man, they had cross-country boxing.

But what if you need to step out of bounds to stop the clock?

Cross training

Not quite cross-country, but we used to play bocce in the woods.

Even bowling?

Not sure how your folks would feel about the house being counted as “cross-country”.

Errrrr. Is that a sandpit or kitty litter?

Looks a bit less boring than conventional sport.

So far no one has asked what someone in the strip would see instead of seeing Hobbes chase after Calvin. I don’t know but my guess is that they wouldn’t see Hobbes at all.

A very unusual strip in that Calvin seems to have the advantage over Hobbes in most panels! It’s rare for him to outwit Hobbes at all but he keeps doing so in today’s strip! Of course, Hobbes is enjoying the game and could easily catch Calvin and get the ball from him if he wanted to end it.

Imaginary game with trusted friend. What could be better?

Hockey would be a little rough.

I must say that despite being a lonely and misunderstood six-year-old, he does a very good job using his perplexing imagination to entertain himself!

Sure would be less boring than the typical ball games.

Sometimes chess games are rootless….

All neighborhoods should have a close stand of trees with a stream of running water. Most city parks were made by people that have rejected this.

I suggested to my honey, we could spice up football by giving certain players bats or allowing tackling in baseball. My suggestion wasn’t well received. Sad.

I came up with a game in which I could not interest anyone where a towns football and baseball team would be simultaneously playing another’s at the same time and in the same stadium. I got the idea from back when the teams shared the stadium and you could see the outlines of the football field when they were playing baseball and vice versa.

Since they make up and agree to the rules as they go, it should be no problem going universal

I had one cat who liked to play meow-and-seek. He would hide until he got bored and then meow until I found him. :)

Cross-country football, contact sport golf… what’s next?

You have to admire the way they make their own fun. It is a lost art with today’s kids.

The Tarahumara have a team race where team members take turns moving a ball forward with their feet, similar to dribbling in soccer. A race might be 150 miles.

Calvin’s eyes peering out of the mailbox reminds me of the early “Ed, Edd n Eddy” episode “It’s Way Ed,” when the trio of Eds try inventing a fad wearing really weird costumes combining several fads into one that includes mailboxes over their heads.

Would think (being a tiger) that Hobbes would find it rather easy to find Calvin.

Football is a game, not a sport.
