Did you see that news story from a couple months ago, where they found a perfectly preserved Burger King with 1980’s decor behind a walled-off door in a Delaware shopping mall that was going through some renovations?
I’ve not been reading the cartoon for a few days and it looks like I’ve missed out on a few interesting discussions! I love how Elvis is happy being held by the Woman so he can get some proper newscasting in!
That is something of a twist, I supposed. I refuse to believe Freddie led them here just for crown molding, though. Tillie should be happy because the news is once again all about the new (old) addition.
Beatrixia: So how is Iron Glove getting along with his Comfy Chair design?
Adobe Style: He has several designs in mind, but he needs help writing them down. And he would like someone to help with the actual construction of the chair prototypes.
Bea: I know a brilliant, if somewhat grumpy scribe who could document the specifications.
Maat-Tilda: That’s an understatement, but it’s true he is brilliant. But will he do it?
Bea: No harm in asking.
*At the scribe office*
Elvis-Anum: Well, I’m not too busy at the moment. I do have some extra blue ink I could use to write down the specs.
Bea: Thank you. That would be so wonderful.
Sophititi: I think Burt-Ra’s team is not too busy right now. Do you think he could spare Wally for a bit?
Elvis is quite content in the woman’s arms. Despite Tommy’s woman having been in the walled off addition, she may not have been in that specific room behind that walled-off door.
While crown molding was primarily used for decorative purposes (because who doesn’t spend a lot of time looking at the ceiling), it also served as an extra protection against drafts as plastering at wall junctions tended to crack in those days.
I lived in a place where a “mother-in-law” unit had been made by closing off a door to an addition. The owner didn’t even bother to plaster it over and the door was acoustically transparent. I finally had to insist that it be covered with sound-damping drywall.
How is it that a contemporary person has been in a room that was probably walled off before her time, as neither she nor anyone else knew it was there?
There actually are plenty of reasons why the addition may have closed off; it may have been more expensive to wire for upgraded power, there may be broken pipes, there may just be asbestos or lead that it wasn’t economically prudent to remove; the assumption would actually be that there is an external door for maintenance staff to use to make sure nothing has become a danger to the inhabited part, and perhaps the entryway is being used for storage.
Sort of OT: So while typing a comment above and my computer trying to helpfully tell me that I was spelling moulding wrong, I went back up and to see what Georgia used and I see she used molding. I checked out Google to see what it had to say. I found that moulding is the preferred spelling by those in the industry, which explains why I spell it that way since I work for a company that sells mouldings and millworks.
Same thing happened in the episode of “Family Guy” I finally got around to watching. They found a whole other Peter and Stewie. No mention of the others but apparently only Peter and Stewie looked inside.

Love how the Woman is holding Elvis (and how Elvis has gotten closer to the story)!

Crown Moulding sounds ominous.

So… This is a walled off addition… That’s not walled off?
Ricky Bennett about 2 years ago
If you wall off an addition, it becomes a subtraction…

I just noticed that Tommy’s Woman is wearing a ring on the third finger of her left hand. A wedding ring? What do we know of her back story?
Sue Ellen about 2 years ago
The woman uses the plural them to refer to the doors, so that means there are more doors to be found.
arolarson Premium Member about 2 years ago
Well, this is a buzzkill. If they are superfluous doors to known rooms, what could be there to find? Unless……

The addition sounds nice.
Elvis looks like Mr. Angry Fussy Paws. As usual.

It looks like there is still a doorknob on the door. Wouldn’t that have stuck out past the plaster?

And so the mystery deepens. Dhat, Da daaaa.

Having seen a bunch of house-hunting shows on TV, I’m aware that the general public has a peculiar idea of what “crown molding” is.
floralian about 2 years ago
Just wondering ever since this arc started. How do you plaster over a door knob without it showing?
willie_mctell about 2 years ago
They needed the crown molding to hang pictures.

Wait, if she’s been in there that must mean the plaser doesn’t date to the Edwardian period.

Expect more mold after all these years. And people said I was exaggerating with the hazmats.
