I’m so old I spent 20 years with a king, but I still had some tears when she died. She was a good queen and from looking at history I know there weren’t many of them
Call me insensitive, but I’m not going to get overly distraught over the loss of a head of state of a foreign country, especially one who literally inherited the job. It’s not like the queen devoted her life to changing the world for the better.
Personally I don’t understand the obsession so many of my fellow Americans have with British Royalty. The TV coverage is over the top IMHO. Ronald Reagan didn’t get this much coverage when he died.
She was crowned the year before I was born. My grandparents called Victoria Queen and George King, before Elizabeth. I remember them comparing and speculating as I was growing up. I think she was truly remarkable and I agree with Janis.
She is the only queen I’ve known my entire life and I was 3 when Charles was born. I can only imagine that his burning desire to inherit the throne has cooled over the years and about now he’s wondering if giving up his peaceful life is worth it.
Another reason why this is the best comic strip published today. Even if you don’t agree with the point of view, the subject is topical and right in line with how the characters might react.
While all too many royals have abused their position… and inherited wealth … Elizabeth II wasn’t one of them. She didn’t choose to be born into royalty and likely wasn’t particularly keen on inheriting the crown from her father but she wore it with as much dignity and humility as possible under the circumstances.
I’m just gonna clench my teeth (metaphorically) and wait until King William and Queen Catherine are rulers after the British empire shrinks when the colonies decide to take back their independence.
One thing about the Queen, personally observed. It was June 1984at her birthday parade. I was a young US Army Captain and had done a favor for a tall strapping Lieutenant of the Grenadier Guards in Germany a few months earlier. He knew My wife and I were to be in London that week. He sent us invitations so we went. We were in the first box just to the right of the Queen who was on horseback reviewing the troops. Suddenly there was a shot. And everyone flinched..except the Queen.. she didn’t move. Sharpshooters suddenly appeared from all the rooftops, but it was evidently nothing, just a car backfiring or something…. But she never moved an inch.
She became Queen two months before I was born and I have witnessed many of her greatest achievements and missteps, but in all I felt like she did a great job.

I know how you feel! I’ve shed a few tears for her majesty as well. She became queen 7 years before I was born. It’s so hard to believe she’s gone.

As someone on Twitter pointed out, James Bond no longer works for “Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

I’m with Janis here. Queen Elizabeth II was the Queen all my days too, an icon. She does leave a space open, vacant.

I wonder how Charles will fare as a King. I don’t have great hopes for him or the survival of the Royal Family in it’s current state.
