The number of GQP trolls crawling out from under their rocks is impressive today. Almost like the number of cases TFG and his family are losing and indicative of the number of them who bought full sets of trading cards to go along with their TrumpU diplomas
Morality is the belief that some behavior is right and acceptable and that other behavior is wrong. In a society or any group, it is the set of principles used to define the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. The concept of morality is pretty essential for human civilization. It keeps society from falling apart. Morality is used to define what is good and what is bad — it sets the thresholds on social values and is used to calibrate human suffering, resolve conflicts of interest, assign praise and blame and punish the guilty.
But morality and particularly its concepts for good and bad are established by the society/culture/group involved and those are generally determined by ‘what works’. And ‘what works’ changes, depending on circumstances. There are probably more than 50 shades of ‘circumstances’. Cannibalism is considered immoral most places and most times, but there are some times and places in which it was considered proper and religiously necessary. Murder vs justifiable homicide. Stealing someone’s land vs settling the West.
“In response to your application to display the image of your ancestor in the National Portrait Gallery, you must know that we have very high standards for who can be honored this way. While we appreciate that your ancestor cured cancer; negotiated a lasting peace in the Middle East; discovered anti-gravity; and won the Nobel Prize, 7 Oscars, 2 Pulitzer Prizes, and the Fields Medal, we must balance that against other aspects of per’s life, and here we are horrified.
“Per was known to wear leather, eat meat, and consume dairy products forcibly extracted from captive bovine Americans. Like the phrase fluid moral standards. It’s very flexible as one can substitute almost any term and make it work. Ethics anyone?

There’s a reason my Officers used to tell me “Don’t let me catch you doing that again.” I didn’t let them “catch me” the next time. Lesson learned.

Back in the 70s, it was called “situational ethics”. It took me a while to figure out what that meant. It means the opposite of “character”.

In politics the “old saying” is “INDICTMENTS? GOOD! MY BASE WILL BELIEVE I’M BEING UNFAIRLY ATTACKED AND SEND ME MONEY!”
It’s not as succinct but is probably more true – these days.
