And you thought his wife was suffering because she is having a 45th birthday. I tell you middle aged men suffer 10 times worse! You just don’t know because we suffer in silence. (Silence, with one exception. When we are confiding with our favorite bartender at the bar!)
Elly, don’t complain. He is showing some affection for you ! ! ! I would love to have some one to show some affection to at at this time of my life. It would be great so ’don’t knock it’ you have someone ! ! !
There’s a quirky New Zealand police show on Acorn TV called The Brokenwood Mysteries where the lead detective is a C-W fan. He also listens to compact cassettes because the ancient car he drives preceded CD players by twenty years.
A true Canadian would be listening to Leonard Cohen if he was after music-to-slit-your-wrists-by. But as LC was a truly excellent and profound poet and musician, and John was more in the mood for foot-tapping tear jerkers, guess that wouldn’t have worked.
Trust me those songs take a whole new meaning when you lose your Spouse. I always enjoyed all types of music and now most songs are just another trigger for me.
Glad to see this strip. I was getting sick of Elly’s whining about her age. Many of my compatriots did not live as long as she has. There were some who were killed in action before they ever got a chance to start a family. They gave their lives so that people like John and Elly could have the freedom to start a family and grow old.
Used to be Country songs would lament his woman leaving. Now, thanks to electric vehicles, I’m waiting for the first Country song where a guy’s TRUCK leaves him.
Not sure what music Elly likes. One thing is for sure; if Elly was born in 1979, then it was impossible for her to have been a hippie in the 1960s. These strips sure are inconsistent.

Like Joni Mitchel said “You don’t know what you got til it’s gone” John loves what he has and does not want to lose her.

Country song that everyone loves
If the South would have won we’d have it made.
I’d probably run for president of the Southern states
The day Patsy Cline died
We would show our southern pride.
If the South would have won we’d have it made.
I would put the Supreme Court in Texas.
And we wouldn’t have no killers getting away scotfree.
If they were proven guilty then they would fry quickly.
Instead of writing books and smiling on TV.
We would all learn Creole cooking in Louisiana.
And I would put our nation’s capital in Montgomery, Alabama.
We would Florida on the right track because we’d take Miami back
And send all those pushers to the slammer.
Oh, if the South would have won, we’s have it made.
I’d probably run for President of the Southern States
The day Elvis died, we’d show our Southern pride
If the south would have won, we’d have it made
Play a little Dixieland boys, ah yes
I would have all the whiskey distilled in Tennessee.
And all the horses bred in those Kentucky hills.
The national treasury would be in Tupelo, Mississippi
And I would put Hank Williams’ picture on $50 bills.
I would have all the cars made in the Carolinas
And ban all the ones made in China
I would have every girl child sent to Georgia to learn to smile.
And talk with that Southern accent that drives men wild
I would have all the fiddles made in Virginia
Cause they sure can make ‘em sound so fine
I’m going up on Wolverton Mountain and see old Clifton Clowers
And have a sip of his good old Arkansas wine
Hey, if the South woulda won we’d a had it made
Might even be better off

My dad also listened to country music, so I recognize the first two classics:
“Walking the Floor Over You” by Ernest Tubb

“Your Cheatin’ Heart” by Hank Williams

Here’s a happy Country Music Alternative
Oh,The Yellow Rose Of Texas is the cutest thing on Earth
Her right eye looks at Dallas
And her left one at Fort Worth
Her ponytail’s a dandy,her hairdo is a prize
But it sure enough comes in handy, when she’s a-shooin’ flies
I was working in the garden when I discovered her
I reached for an old tomato….and Darling,there you were….
