When I was a kid in the ’50s we used an old Coca Cola sign. Think a saucer sled but six feet across. We could fit six or eight kids in that thing with no way to control where it went. Now that was an adventure!
Here in Flagstaff saucers outsell even plastic sleds. Our grandkids love them!
We usually have only a few sledding weeks per year – sometimes none – so wooden sleds are just for the well-heeled or travelers. That said, I’m still dealing with the 30 inches of snow that have fallen so far this week. It ain’t fair, I tell ya!
As kids we used all the usual sliding options: sled, toboggan, saucer, and inner tubes of various sizes. In college we’d take trays from the cafeteria and go sledding between classes. When doing that one had to make a quick decision before reaching the bottom of the short hills, plow into the bushes or bail out.

It’s hard to negotiate now. He was hoping toboggan for a long sled.

The saucer will take you in any direction the ground goes. And good luck.

I wonder how far an adventuress man can go sledding on the ground that is covered by desert sand? Isn’t sand known for supplying traction?

Spray on a little non-nutrative cereal coating and try for light speed.

i always preferred the saucer to a toboggan or other sled. The chaos is what made it so fun.

I had one of those when I was the age of my avatar. Yeah, there’s no steering those things.

One good bump and you were airborne and upside down.

Alligators and crocodiles have what’s called a ‘death roll’. Kids on saucers have what’s called a ‘death spin’!!

The saucer sledding scene in Christmas Vacation comes to mind. And tears of laughter to my eyes.

Those are a lot of fun attached to a long rope that’s attached to a Quarter Pony! The only drawback is losing your grip and hitting frozen hose poop.

Saucers are also much lighter in weight and easier to carry back up the hill.
