Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
I suppose haiku come across as verse in Japanese (and maybe in French?); they donât at all (for me) in English.
As nsr60 says above, âJust count your syllables and arrange themâ typographically; but thatâs a puzzle or game, not a poem, to my ears. Not that thereâs anything wrong with that; puzzles and games are good.
But to me it takes rhythm, not just a count of syllables, to make a poem thatâs metrical. And if youâre writing free verse, you donât need to count syllables.

Reminder that Bill Watterson is the first cartoonist to ever use âboogerâ in a comic strip. (Or so he hopes someone confirms.)

Iâd count the syllables to see if the first 2 haikus followed the rules, but counting is a form of math, so, no.

I donât like haikus.
Theyâre too short to be much fun.
And they never rhyme.

Haikus can be tough
but theyâre fun when they work out.
Donât give up, Phoebe.
(I miss the old âHaiku Eweâ strip that used to be on GoComics.)

Todd may have gotten the syllable count right. But he didnât use any nature imagery, so itâs not a true haiku.
