As I noted at the beginning of this arc, Watterson has explained that the GROSS Club is based on a real two-boy Anti-Girl club which he formed with a boy who lived next door to him and to his brother Tom and that. when they couldn’t find any girls to harass, they harassed Tom Watterson instead. This final strip in the latest GROSS Club story arc shows his fond memories of his childhood.
I am sitting here looking out on to the garden, reading my favourite comics and enjoying an espresso and some toast with old english orange marmalade. Sadly, my four-legged friend is no longer here to complete the scene. But it is still a wonderful way to spend some time on a beautiful summer day.
This afternoon I will continue my work on my comics. Nearly 400 have been drawn. I have 2 scan 2 more today. And I have close to 300 that still need to be coloured in. I book layout is finished. Four more are in the works.
And then I have to figure out how to finally upload them on to the Instagram account my daughter set up for me within two minutes, achieving something I was unable to figure out in 2 weeks.
May you all enjoy your weekend and, hopefully, some beautiful weather (summer in the northern hemisphere, winter in the southern hemisphere and the usual in the equatorial zone).
Just think, if Calvin’s poorly-thought out scheme actually succeeded, he would be sitting in his room with mom reading him the riot act instead of sitting in his treehouse with mom serving him lunch!
i know it sounds strange but I wish summer was over. After 3 months of sun, temperatures 30+ and thousands of tourists I could do with some rain and a night that is cooler than 26.
The first panel revels the true height of the tree house. The floor is only about 4 or 5 feet off of the ground. I wonder if Calvin realizes that his mom is a girl.
Summer will soon be over (although we are due for a heat wave the next week of so) and then it’s time for football, snow forts and snowball ambushes of Suzy and best of all… Snow Goons!! The Count ❤️s Calvin and Hobbes no matter what season. :)
Like I said, at least this arc has a bittersweet ending, what with after Susie defeated Calvin at his own G.R.O.S.S. plan, Calvin is back to being all upbeat and having a good time with Hobbes.
That’s how summer should spent. Chillin’ in a tree with all your favorite comic books and a best friend! That’s something we don’t see anymore. Kids reading comics books. I guess not since everything is online. I love “Gigantor” and “The Green Hornet”!
When I was 12-ish, I remember one evening at my Grandmother’s house. I was sitting in a really soft comfy chair reading old Popular Mechanics and Mechanix Illustrated magazines than an uncle of mine had left there many years earlier. I remember her bringing me a snack, too. It is such a good memory ! Then came high school, girls, cars and all of that. Now that I am retired , try as I might, I can’t get that safe , comfortable feeling back. To much to do and worry about.
Here in Ontario Summer is over when the CNE opens in Toronto. We are busy prepping the RV to go to The Soo and the UP of Michigan for 2 weeks then we will come home to school buses and considerably less tourist traffic.

Whoa! They’re actually enjoying lunch instead of planning to throw it at Susie?

I find it interesting that this G.R.O.S.S. arc ended with Calvin’s mom nicely giving him lunch instead of getting angry at him.
Probably because he didn’t succeed in drenching Susie.

Calvin, keep an ear out for, “braapp brapp brapp… braaaaaazzzzzzzzzz.” Suzie may want your fortress to be ground level.

Nothing (at least for Calvin) beats comic books and lunch in the shade to remove the sting of the failure of his water balloon plan!

It never seems to occur to Calvin that his mom is a “slimy girl”. Or at least she used to be.

Reading comic books in the summer with your neighborhood pals! (Our “treehouse” was my buddy’s breezeway, between his house and the garage.)
Someday, Calvin will realize that his loving Mom is one of those “slimy girls” he thinks he hates.
