Remember bottle and can openers, AKA “Church Keys?” I keep one in the kitchen. When a jar won’t open, I put the pointy end of the church key under the rim of the lid and pop the seal. After that, the jar opens easily.

I used to have to do the knife trick but not I do Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and my grip is way better. My Fiance is so impressed when I bust open the pickles in one hard twist, it is just ridiculous when it is pickle time. She loves how masculine I am when it is pickle time.

The most common reason for a jar not being able be opened is because of it having too much oxygen in it. One way to fix that is to turn the jar upside down and smack it hard a couple of times with your hand while holding it with your other and that should shift the oxygen and lid should open.

A local made a under counter opener with a couple of hacksaw blades. Put twist off top in, turn and done. As for canning jars, I run the lid under hot water and hey presto!

I bet it opens all at once and the contents go flying all over Liz.You should always keep the opening of a mustard jar pointed in a safe direction.

Be careful with the church key! It could break off little bits of glass and drop them in the contents!

I usually take the jar to the sink, where we have a “boiling hot water” dispenser. That works wonders. Running that extremely hot water over the rim of the lid makes it come loose. I am not sure how much it is because the metal expands or because the heat melts whatever goo is sticking the lid in place, or maybe a combination, but it works well.

And this is why I have a jar opening machine. It does a great job and I don’t make funny faces and still wind up with an unopened jar. Plus, I’m 70, and I refuse to fight with inanimate objects anymore.
