Earl is right. The most significant painting ā and inventions ā developed from thinking outside the rules [lines] and ignoring some traditions. The greatest challenge to the inventive mind is āit canāt be done.ā
My artist mom never realized she had astigmatism until she got her first pair of glasses at age 50. She said it took her months to get over drawing parallelograms & be able to draw rectangles again!
I suppose I could get down like Earl, even stay that way for a bit. But getting up would not be graceful ā more like laughable. A footstool nearby might help.

Itās one of the things I flunked in kindergarten, coloring outside the lines. I really got a (what I thought was) talking down to for just this!

Is Earl equating art with bad bifocals?

The trick is that the great artists did first learn to color inside the box to learn discipline before exploring wider possibilities.
