It’s what most folks fear as they age: a step in giving up your independence and having to start to rely on others to look after you. It’s this psychological step which is the biggest and most painful. The move? Heck, you can hire people to do that.
A lot of times, a husband will be a big talker if his wife is talking about something, but then he’ll wait and see if she will cool off or if it goes deep this time.
Allias1600 brought up a critical point yesterday, and Mam58 expanded on it: This is a comic strip that is mature but has a lot of life left in it.
A&J rattling around in their current house is a tapped-out setting. They are no longer interacting with neighbors (didn’t do that much). So, we can advance all the reasons for moving and for staying, but in the end the only thing that actually matters is not where the characters are going, but where the strip is going.
I am confused; it seems that Arlo is more open to moving to the coast than Janis. And, I do not know what is holding them back. From what I’ve seen over the past few years, both A & J have seemingly retired. They have no other ties back home other than Ludwig; and, he’s portable.
We moved two hundred miles last summer, after living in the same place for about 28 years. It was traumatic and an unbelievable amount of work, but totally worth it. We were unsure about the new house, but after a year it has turned out to be better than the old one.
If Jimmy is feeling that his strip is in need of some excitement, the story line of Janice’s apprehensions and the actual move opens a myriad of new story lines. This is genius perfection in the making of a generational comic strip.
thinking about moving to the coast is fun (we’ve actually done that). But with the hurricane hitting Florida, it’s not as romantic and idea as it could be right now.
My kids get mad at me because I let my wife make most decisions. There are 2 reasons for this. The first is that we’re pretty much in synch. The second it that I don’t give a hoot about the fine details most of the time. If she want to paint the walls green it doesn’t matter to me if it’s Dragon’s Butt Green, Fairy’s Butt Green, or Frog’s Butt Green. I can’t tell the difference anyway. But when it comes to moving it’s aways been dictated by my job (including 2 times absolutely hated where I worked). Retirement was greatly debated between our ideal location in the Great Smokies or being closer to our grandkids in PA. The grandkids won out.
We did that [moving near at least one of the kids’ family] twice. First in Florida, then in central PA as we aged, so now we’re near our daughter, and living in the independent living section of a graduated care facility. It’s great! We CHOSE to come here, and we’re aware that as we continue aging, we’ll eventually need more care, and it’s right here! I suggest that process to the rest of you, too!

I’ve been telling all you doubters. Janice will work her womanly wiles and get this move done!

Or Janice is the momentum of the two.

After yesterday it really sounded like Janis had cooled quickly on the idea.

The hardest realization is simply that life is changing, status quo is always easy

This could be the way Jimmy Johnson wraps up the comic strip. There has been talk on his own blog about him closing things out by December 31st, 2023.
