It depends on how we define ‘sound’. If we define it as ‘vibrating air’, then I agree, a falling tree makes a sound. BUT, if we define it as a conscious experience, the lonesome falling tree does not make a sound. There, problem solved.
The summer I spent in the northern Ontario bush, we discovered that birch trees rotted while standing. We enjoyed playing Hulk and pushing over large trees.
Wanda, every time Zoe tries to rat out Hammie, smile and say “Hammie doing those things just makes me love him all the more! So, thanks, Zoe for telling me! I’ll go get Hammie an ice cream later today.”
The actual philosophical question is whether it makes a noise. Sound is an objective phenomenon, independent of observers. Noise is a subjective judgment, requiring an observer able to make the judgment that it’s noise.
only human arrogance would assume that a person would need to hear it…what about all the birds and other wildlife within earshot? I guess they don’t count? Lol!
They seemed to have abandoned the spitwad incident. I’m surprised that no one has considered separating Hammie and Trent. If not separate classrooms, separate sides of the room. Trent’s been a bad influence since preschool. The only time I have seen him WITHOUT a malicious expression was when he was angelically denying any involvement with the spitwads.
In physics, sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. In human physiology and psychology, sound is the reception of such waves and their perception by the brain. WikipediaThe accepted frequencies are 20-20,000Hz.

If you weren’t around to see it, did it really happen?

Does it make a sound? Who cares.

She’s gonna ignore it, because most trees are big.

And once again, Zoe gets an A+ for her Tattling 101 class.

Yes, it makes a sound. The air molecules are vibrated when it crashes. Sound does not require to be heard.

If a man is a thousand miles away from the nearest woman and he says something, is he still wrong?
Answer: Well of course he is.

Dumb question and very anthropocentric. The sound is made, and at the very least the bear heard it.
