When I was a kid (70 years ago) our farm neighbor had a dog that “smiled”. It took me a while to figure out that big dog’s grin. She was a actually a very sweet girl. From her daughter’s litter I got one of her pups. He didn’t smile. He was big, loyal and protective. RIP Rex.
If you are happy and you know it wag your tail. If you are happy and you know it then your tail will surely show it, if you are happy and you know it wag your tail.
Outside of humans, no animal shows his teeth to express anything but aggression. And not every human society has considered showing teeth to be something positive.
We rescued a Doberman from the street, long before “rescue” was in fashion. He (Sampson) smiled so hard, he would sneeze. He got along with our older Doberman, Barron. Barron the same. Miss them both.
Come on kid, give Roscoe a very gentle hug (from the look on his face, don’t squeeze!), lots of pets, and find gramma and grampa and show them that Roscoe isn’t himself! I had to take my dog to the vet today for a UTI. She was a champ, charming everyone there. (Dogs actually see a hug as aggression. That is one reason why puppies squirm so much when we try to hug them.)

That wasn’t a smile, it was a bunch of teeth playing with Nelson’s mind.
