One of my favorite questions to put on music history exams: How many players does it take to play a trio sonata? Answer: 4. Two treble instruments (flutes, violins) and a keyboard player plus a sustaining instrument (cello, bassoon, etc.) for the basso continuo (bass line and harmony).
