I know this is a trope for this comic strip, but when I was bumming rides with people from college, I never took giant piles of laundry and I did not know anyone else who did this. When you are asking someone else to drive, you need to limit your luggage.

And have to do it when you get back?

They aren’t worried about the weather, its the smell of their laundry that’s killing them.

I’ve never known any college kid that let their dirty laundry pile up.

The smell of dirty laundry will be the death of them, long before Mike gets home

If he gets into an accident they’ll assume fatalities because of the stench

The kids bringing home more laundry than luggage on Holiday breaks from school was a running joke for the entire history of the strip

Actually one of the best things she ever did.

Tying the laundry to the car roof would have solved both the washing and stink problem.

They must be horribly stinky people if their laundry is that bad.
