This happened to a neighbor’s friend a couple of months ago. She was so excited to see my neighbor she jumped out of her car to give my neighbor a big hug. Unfortunately, she left the car in neutral and didn’t set the parking brake. The car rolled into the street and into another neighbor’s car. Fortunately, there wasn’t much damage to either vehicles, but it was scary at the time.
Ahhhh, to have a downhill slanted driveway. Ours is slanted uphill, which means that I gotta snowblow that sucker every time it snows more than 3 inches. So fun in late January and early February snowblowing a foot or more of snow when the wind is blowing in my face at 25 MPH and the temp is 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
Forget the car, Calvin! You’re gonna need a alibi, quick! If you hurry to your room now, you can deny you were at the scene at the time. They will have no proof or witnesses after all!
One thing that I love about this particular strip is how Hobbes snatched Calvin back from possible danger, because I can easily see Calvin rushing out into the street.
I’ve seen plenty of “run away” car video clips on America’s Funniest Home Videos on TV. At least you won’t find a little kid responsible. Calvin is in a league of his own!
Oh, Mom and Dad are going to love his story on how he ‘tried his best to save the car’…. after it is hit by another car in the street. Should be interesting with the insurance company, too.
This part always reminds me of “A Goofy Movie” when Max accidentally sends the car rolling down the canyon roadways and he and Goofy have to chase after it.
It sounds like a good idea but chasing a large, rolling, heavy object is a very good way to get maimed or killed. It’s only easy in the movies and those guys pay a LOT for insurance.
I did this as a child. While at the bus stop, I was playing inside the parked car at the house on that corner. I deactivated the parking brake, and almost killed myself trying to stop the car from rolling into the street. The bus came at that exact moment. All the kids saw it. My heart was beyond stress that entire day at school.
AH. So this is parent’s fault for not setting the parking brake in the first place. Plus, did they also leave the gear shift in neutral? Car wouldn’t have rolled if it were in park.

The road will be fine. It’s what the car will crash into that won’t be.

That one awful, horrible moment when you think, “This was a really bad idea”, and then realize there is absolutely nothing you can do about it…

That’s some “imaginary” friend! Hobbs is very real in his concern. This strip has wonderful moments like this.
